TurboTax 2011 Home & Office for the Mac once again delivers for those of us who have a side businesses. All-in-all, this is a great piece of software. It won't take the sting out of paying your taxes but it will make preparation a whole lot easier.
First, the tax calculations: I personally have full time employment and a side consulting business with a home office that has typical expenses and write-offs. TurboTax handles this situation perfectly. All the steps to enter write-offs and deductions are clear and the TurboTax Live Community is, as usual, a very helpful feature if you have a question. Added this year is the ability to call a tax professional to assist with anything you may have a question on. I'm guessing that this is offered for free because the vast, vast, majority of users will never need it. The step-by-step entry and TurboTax Live Community feature is probably all you will need.
Be aware that this download version of TurboTax enables you to create an unlimited number of federal returns. This is great if your doing the taxes for the family. You can also e-file up to five of those Federal returns for free but in all cases you must pay an additional fee (about $20) to e-file state returns. TurboTax can also print your return instead of e-filing so there will be no additional state e-file cost.
Next, the computer-software function: I use this on a MacBook Pro running the latest version of Mac OS X Lion. TurboTax behaves just like you would expect any mature piece of software to behave. No crashes, no corrupted saves, no problems. It just works.
If you have used TurboTax before you will have the added benefit of having most of your basic information already filled out for you after you import last years return. This also enables you to do a year-to-year comparison of your tax situation as you go along. Also, if you donate anything you should be using the TurboTax companion website itsdeductable.com. It makes entry of charitable donations a snap.
The interface is what you've come to expect from TurboTax and is nearly identical to the online version. It offers step-by-step guides for your tax situations and the ability to dive right into individual sections and forms if necessary. It also has a welcome automatic update feature that checks for updates on startup. Generally this is a good feature that reassures the end-user that you have the most up-to-date forms available.
Finally, the comparison. As compared to the online version of TurboTax this generally feels the same but has the aforementioned ability to look at the actual forms as you go along. Also, you can use it for multiple federal returns while the online version allows only one return. I also entered my taxes into a trial version of H&R Block's TaxCut online system just as a check and to see if there was any write-offs I may have missed with TurboTax. The good news is that that there wasn't anything missing and the return amounts calculated the same. I found TaxCut to be a little bit clunkier than TurboTax and generally preferred the TurboTax interface.
I have a couple of minor annoyances but nothing major. The automatic update window can't be minimized to run in the background when it's downloading so you can't easily do things while you wait. I just move it off to the side instead. Also, the Live Community search is somehow tied into your web browser and will open up an empty page. Annoying, but by no means a deal breaker and not enough of an issue to remove a star.
As a whole, I give this 5 stars. Great features and great support.
