This disc forms part of our ongoing Spanish Music series, performed by the BBC Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor, Juanjo Mena. Format: MP3 Music
I'm not sure why the music of Joaquín Turina (1882-1842) is not more often heard in American concert halls. It has everything: local color, brilliant orchestration, hummable melodies, and catchy rhythms all impeccably crafted. This disc has his some of his most familiar works as well as other lesser-known ones that are of a piece with them. As a young man still studying in Paris he had been taken under the wing of Isaac Albéniz who advised him strongly to abandon the Franckian style he had been learning (and using) while studying with D'Indy at the Schola Cantorum and to take up his native country's folk music as a template. He did that with a vengeance and one now cannot hear a bar of his mature music without being transported to Spain.

The disc opens with one of his most familiar works, Danzas Fantasticas (1919), a three movement work inspired by a novel, 'L'orgía' by José Más, and dedicated to his wife. The opening 'Exaltacion' limns the approach, passing and disappearance of a procession, all using the rhythms of the 'jota', an Aragonesque dance style. 'Ensueño' ('Reverie') is based on a Basque 5/8 rhythm which alternates with 6/8. There are musing, dreamy moments interspersed with brash wind interjections. The final 'Orgía' is an orchestral showpiece that alternates uninhibited passages with lighter, more delicate moments. The work is given a marvelous, witty, colorful reading by the BBC Philharmonic under Juanjo Mena.

The 'Danzas Fantasticas' are followed by three works -- the five-movement Poema en forma de canciones Op.19 (1917); Saeta en forma de salve a la Virgen de la Esperanza Op.60 (1931); and Farruca from Triptico Op.45(1928) -- for mezzo and orchestra.
