Grade 7 Up-A reliable and detailed overview of Turkey's history and geography as well as the challenges the nation faces in today's world. While Eboch also covers daily life and customs, little attention is given to environmental issues and nature. Despite the attractive color cover photo of Istanbul, the internal art is limited to black-and-white photos, reproductions, and two maps. The book is well written and has a thorough index and an annotated bibliography. Sidebars introduce topics such as "Baths and Toilets," "Life in the Harem," "Ethnic Groups," "Turkish Currency," "Turkish Dress," and "Shopping in Turkey." A one-page listing of facts is included. Tamra Orr's Turkey (Children's, 2003) is slightly less detailed but offers students a broader view of the country and culture.
