3.0 out of 5 stars An Intensive Course!, February 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Turkish Basic Course, Vol. 1 (Intensive Tape Series) (Paperback)
I used this course to prepare for my recent 5 week teaching tour of Turkey.

First of all I must say it really took a great deal of time. To make progress one must spend about 45 minutes a day on the material and about a week on each lesson (30 total in the course).

The tapes are the most useful part of this course. Through constant drills and (sometimes monotonous) repetition one gets a good feel for the structure of this complex language. The native speakers also commented on my excellent pronunciation which I owe entirely to the tapes.

Now for the shortcomings. Contrary to what the above states, the course was created in the mid 1960's. For this, the dialogs are somewhat dated (groovy, keen!). The sound quality on the tapes leaves a bit to be desired. Finally, the course was created for diplomats so the vocabulary has a bent to this effect. Many drills use words which would only really interest embassy employees. Also, one only learns about 800 words which is a good foundation but hardly a useful working vocabulary.

In all I would recommend this because there is no other comprehensive Turkish teach yourself course out there! Be prepared to work hard and have the tools to survive in this tough language.
