Book Description

The third Joe Denali Detective series finds Joe investigating the death of his new office mate’s wife. There’s a problem with this because Joe’s sergeant has assigned the case to another detective. “You’re too close, Denali. Stay out of it.” But can he?

Nick Kovak joins Joe and Sandy in their three-person office after Rooster Blackwell’s retirement. Joe shows up at Nick’s house when Nick finds his wife dead in their bed and calls 911. At the scene Joe takes Nick aside to talk to him while other detectives scope out the Novak house. Nick has a breakdown and is whisked away in an ambulance. When the sergeant asks about the Kovak teenage son, Joe and Sandy try to find him but he is missing. That’s when Joe does what he always does: disobeys orders and seeks evidence on his own.

Joe has concerns with his new wife, Juliann and their young son. His ex-wife, Beth, has remarried and has brought his six-year-old daughter Rosie to live with her new husband and his two daughters. All problems have to be set aside when Rosie tells him she’s being followed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fine story March 2, 2014

Joe is just a guy who can't open up to his lady
He's an excellent detective, but he's clueless in the world of the opposite sex. So while invested in a mystery concerning his partner he gets smacked by a kidnapping of his own daughter. By the end of the story he finally seems to understand

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but issues hurt the story June 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Let me start by saying I really enjoyed Penny Found, the first Joe Denali novel. I couldn't wait to read the other two, I skipped Plugged Nickel and went straight to this one. By the time I finished the first chapter I realized that this was going to be a different read all together. The story is good but not anywhere near what the first book was. The story felt rushed and heavily fractured. The characters while well rounded, still seemed to be lacking. Even the characters that came from the prior books seemed to be missing something. There was numerous errors through out the story that made reading difficult at times. Missing words in sentences caused sudden stops in reading while trying to figure out what the author meant to say. There were also a few instances where the character names completely changed and then a page later changed back. To me this felt like a new character was being introduced but that wasn't the case. The story was good but tied back into itself so much that it not only became predictable but it also felt like the author had lost her way and just tried to string things together to finish the story. The main crime in the story gets finished at the end, but feels more like it was placed as an after thought more than it was part of the story line. I applaud Barbara Leachman for her efforts to continue the series. However this is not anywhere near her previous work and hurts the Denali franchise.

3.0 out of 5 stars good story, but poor editing. October 11, 2014
By Dave M
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While story holds interest poor editing makes one keep thinking about the family of one of the characters. Is he a "Kovak" or a "Novak ". I kept going back and forth to see if I missed something. Finally it appeared the name should have read Kovak. But then he was referred as Brady Novak once again... Better editing rather than a rush to print, should have ruled first..

3.0 out of 5 stars interestingly dull
Characters slimly developed, story line meandered and unbelievable. The police protocol was unbelievable and the climax was welcome but a stretch.
