5.0 out of 5 stars Take a nice excursion..., January 13, 2008

This review is from: Turn up the Heath (Audio CD)
The three years Jimmy Heath devoted to the preparation of this music was time well spent. He set out to cover influences he experienced and succeeded admirably, combining the affinity the musicians developed from prior contacts with his affection for the subject matter to create a jazz treasure. Afro-Cuban rhythms, blended into original compositions, give the work a distinct flavor.

"Big P", a tribute to his brother Percy featuring alto, baritone, trombone, piano, and bass solos, simply swings. "Heritage", highlighted by Slide Hampton's haunting trombone, is relaxed. Lew Tabackin's flute, the composer's tenor, and two trumpet solos pay tribute to his daughter in "Gemini". "Son" pays homage to a different alto, whose solo is the centerpiece. "I'm Glad" is tender. "Juan", with its driving bass and trumpet (different artist), is dedicated to the star of a Colombian coffee commercial. "Project" has the pianist in the forefront, Mr. Heath sandwiched between two tenors. "Sources", showcasing a different baritone, derives from TV news. "No End" is from and for Kenny Dorham, an under-rated Be Bop pioneer who introduced Joe Henderson, and whose romantic spirit and resilience shines. The baritone and tenor are special."Basic Burks", with three tenors and two trumpets taking turns in front, is for is mentor, Dizzy Gillespie.

There is peace and love here to enjoy. We are fortunate to have it. For those who like Gerald Wilson, Mr. Heath is reminiscent. If you like contemporary big band, this music is for you.

These jaded ears have heard a lotta jazz, & Jimmy is one of the great ones. A real treat to hear large ensemble reprises of numbers like BIG P, ONE FOR JUAN & PROJECT S. You gotta wait awhile to hear something new from Jimmy or the Heath Brothers, but it's always worth it. It's been awhile since I derived so much pleasure from a new recording; Highly recommended.

I love this album. By far, I thing this is one of Jimmy Heath's most ecstatic albums to date. It has great flow and a delightful, peppy beat. Great music for a gathering or relaxation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great straight-ahead jazz, May 8, 2010
This review is from: Turn up the Heath (Audio CD)
This album really swings. There is a mixture of different tempos, styles (some Latin, one in 3/4 time, for example); the arrangements are tight, and the recording is nice and clear and close to the mike. I particularly like the baritone solos, and Heath's own Soprano stuff on track 9. Heath comments briefly on each track in the notes. If you like straight-ahead jazz, you would have to like this album.

Sometimes I forget that there is are others still doing the big band thing well other than Clayton Hamilton ("Explosive" with Milt Jackson being great example) and the latest form the evergreen Bill Holman. But leave it up to the great Jimmy Heath to pour it on into his 80's on this this 2006 release.William did a fine review so now just listen and buy!!!!!!!!!!!

Peace

Chazz
