4.0 out of 5 stars Solid science, good advice
As a person who was thin for about the first 30 years of my life, I haven't been able to figure out my "problem" with not being able to lose the weight I've gained. 2.0 out of 5 stars Deceptive, not up-to-date, disappointing.
I ordered this book the other day in hopes that I found my answer to "turn of the hunger switch". I began reading the book quite enthusiastically. As I got deeper into the book, I became more and more disappointed. Dr. Rivas prefaces his book that it is not your diet or exercise that is the reason for your weight problems. He claims it is all a matter of the brain...

As a person who was thin for about the first 30 years of my life, I haven't been able to figure out my "problem" with not being able to lose the weight I've gained. I know WHAT to do (reduce calories and exercise), but I lack the motivation to do it, and also feel hungry almost all of the time. Dr. Rivas' book explained the brain science behind my situation and even helped me peg the events/timeframe that this became an issue for me. I will be talking with my Dr. about his recommendations, although I'm glad he gives natural supplements as well as prescription medications as alternatives. This is not another "6 weeks to a great body" type book. Turn Off the Hunger Switch provides practical recommendations - as long as you're willing to ingest natural or pharmaceutical supplements to achieve your goals! P.S. Calories and exercise do matter as well, but they're not the end-all and be-all according to Dr. Rivas. His ideas are worth reading and considering if you're not having success with the regular approaches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turn off the hunger switch forever, January 18, 2002
This review is from: Turn Off The Hunger Switch: Reset Your Brain to Change Your Weight (Hardcover)
Recently my mom was a patient of Dr. Rivas, so it was no suprise for me to see that Dr. Rivas wrote a book. My mother lost 80 lbs. on Dr. Rivas's diet and the book gave me an understanding to how the program and medicine works for her specific brain type and body type. I found the book very informative and interesting to read. My mom tried every diet imaginable and Dr. rivas was the only one in the medical field who saw her problem as not her fault and cureable. This book makes it easy for people to go to their doctor with a knowledge that they can be cured of obesity and there is help. I recommend this book highly for anyone who has fought to lose weight and needs answers.

I heard the tale end of an interview with Dr. Rivas on the radio this past Spring, enough to spark my interest anyway. The few reviews that were currently on this site indicated that the book was probably worth the read.

Even though I run regularly and try to eat a healthy diet, I have continued to gain weight for the past 8 years. I tried counting calories, increasing my weekly running mileage, group weight loss programs, etc. The scale just kept creeping up.

After reading this book I was able to determine what "type" I was and purchase the supplements recommended. Since starting on the supplements 8 weeks ago, I've lost 8 pounds. I'm eating well, but the sugar cravings and compulsive evening eating have dissappeared. I'm not "dieting," simply eating when I'm hungry and making good food choices most of the time. When I do decide to eat something decadent I don't feel complelled to eat great quantities, a little is quite satisfying these days. All of the behaviors that have sabotaged past attempts at weight loss are gone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Could this be true?, March 2, 2002

I just got this book from a friend who purchased it for me(wonder why) I don't like RX meds so I was thankful Dr Rivas added natural ammino acids and others. The draw back as with any natural remedy, is that I am taking about 8 tabs a day all day. You have to take some before meals, some after. All in all within 3 weeks I lost 8 lbs but I am holding there. I don't feel like eating, but I do anyway( which is the problem with many overweight people). I will say the cravings are gone, the jittery hunger is gone, but still I clean my plate. I would say this would be a miracle if I literally ate a few bites and left the table. So excercise and diet limits are still in play. After a few days the energy went away also. However, this book is the first to treat obesity with a heart and some help. Maybe a little more research and we will have the answer. Thank you Dr Rivas for helping to start the ball rolling.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY an answer!, February 20, 2002

I have this book and I am also a patient of Dr. Rivas. I know every diet program tells you that it's the "latest and greatest" and it's hard to know which one to try. THIS IS THE ONE!

Ofcourse I was a little skeptical at first (who isn't?) But here's what makes it different:

A) You don't have to starve yourself or feel deprived
B) You don't have to exercise
C) You don't have to watch what you eat or count calories
D) You will KEEP the weight off
E) It makes your body do the work for you...no willpower required!

I have tried everything...[another program] worked for me at one time but I quickly strayed from the diet and gained all of my weight back. Plus who has time to count every calorie and keep track of everything you eat? Not me.

Dr. Rivas is amazing...this is the most inspirational weight loss book I have ever read. He gives hope to those of us who have lost all hope. This is the way to do it...not those "lose 40 lbs in 3 days" plans. Dr. Rivas is a DOCTOR not just some "weight loss guru". Believe me, he KNOWS what he's talking about. The best part about Dr. Rivas' plan is that he isn't in it for the money....he gives you natural alternatives as an option so you can do it all on your own. I urge you to read his book...it will make SUCH a difference in your life...it sure has with mine.

I've lost 21 pounds and counting....with NO effort! I wish I would've found him years ago!

5.0 out of 5 stars Blame Your Genes - Not Yourself, November 30, 2002

Being 100 pounds overwieght for the past 20 years has been exhausting work. Finally, a program that works. This book is written so anyone can understand. Having read Dr. Rivas's book, I asked my own Doctor to help me to lose weight, utilizing the easy to understand program laid out in detail in this book. My Doctor refused to help me and advised me to go to weight watchers and stop eating so much. As luck would have it, I live where Dr. Rivas practices, so needless to say, my next stop was his office. I called for an appointment and was asked my height and weight by his staff. Upon revealing that I was 5' 8" and 310 pounds, I was advised to come in that same day, as I am dangerously obese. I transferred my recent blood tests to Dr. Rivas, which revealed cholesterol in the range of 300 and sugar levels very close to being diabetic. Meeting Dr. Rivas, he assured me he could help. First, he advised that I was not a fat, lazy, undisciplined, slob who ate too much. The problem is in the genes I inherited and a brain chemistry out of control. This is the first time anyone had made me feel like I could do something about my weight without starving myself. Well, it is now one year and 85 pounds later. My colesterol is down to 170 and sugar is well within normal. I am still losing weight, I excerise regularly, am eating well balanced meals (note: not starving), and feel better than I have for over 20 years. Thanks to Dr. Rivas helping me to reset my brain to turn off the hunger switch. Dr. Rivas saved my life!!!

I am and EMT and have to grab a meal whenever and whereever I can. It's not easy to get good nutrition that way. When I read this easy-to-read book and began to try to figure out my own profile, I started trying different supplements and amino acids that Dr. Rivas recommended in the book. In 4 months I lost 34 pounds and have maintained the loss for the last 5 months. The first 16 pounds were lost Without using Phentermine. I've lost from a size 18 down to a 12. Before that I had not been able to lose any weight in the past 25 years. This is the easiest thing I've tried. The hardest thing is just swallowing the vitamin and supplement pills every day and that is only discipline!

5.0 out of 5 stars It Works For Me, June 30, 2002
This review is from: Turn Off The Hunger Switch: Reset Your Brain to Change Your Weight (Hardcover)
I would rate this in the top five of the most important works I've ever read. I took the short survey at the front of the book and discovered that I fit into the most common class of over-eaters, the norepinephrine profile. Dr. Rivas explained in clear terms why I was always hungry and why diet and exercise never worked for me. The remedy was a few inexpensive over-the-counter supplements that turned off the hunger switch and turned my life around completely. At 200 pounds I was tired and hungry anyway, so it was no great sacrifice to give the diet an extra push by cutting my normal calories by 60 or 75 percent. Consequently, I've lost 49 pounds in just under five months. Yesterday, someone even commented that my eyes were noticeably sparkling. Well, yours would too, if you felt this good about yourself! One very unexpected benefit is the fact that I am no longer tired all day long. The modest amount of caffeine in the diet (less than you would get in a cup of coffee) still lets me sleep well at night, and I look forward to every meal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, May 23, 2002

At first I was disappointed that this seemed like another drug/supplement book. I thought I had already tried every combination and failed. But then I read this book and for the first realized how my allergy medication was making me fat. That was the first thing to go. Then I realized I hadn't tried one of the supplements and it was at the center of one of my other problems that contributed to my weight issues. Once I started taking them, I lost 2 lbs in 4 days. I lost my desire to "stuff" myself, and I also was free from an addiction I've had and fought for many years. My brain is finally doing what I want it to do. Thank you Dr. Rivas.

I've had a weight problem for 45 years. When I told doctors that "eating makes me hungry", "I can never get full" they ALL looked at me like I was crazy.

So I tried diet and exercise. For 6 years, I exercised up to THREE HOURS a day, ate a low-fat, high carb diet. Result - I gained 10 lbs. a year. (I stopped doing that!!!!!!!!)

I've been using non-prescription supplements to follow Dr. Rivas recommended approach for a short time. But I can already tell it's working, even though I'm using the minimum dosage of ephedra (with green tea extract and caffeine), 5-HTP, SAMe and b-complex). My constant hunger and cravings are GONE!.

This could be the solution to my problem, finally.
