Not what you wanted, but STAY TUNED,
By J (UK) - See all my reviews

Possibly one of the most anticipated releases from fans of true hiphop and those in the know, this album just doesn't deliver. Many of the tracks seem rushed and scrappy, the lyrics on Know Your Enemy (one of the better tracks) although well intentioned, are in my opinion some of DP's weakest. That said, based on beats alone this is a fairly good album by today's standards, average at worst. If Let's Get Free was the breath of fresh air hip hop fans have been waiting for, Turn Off The Radio was the exhalation back out. But stay tuned for the next release, it can only get better.

Those who have posted reviews do not understand this album. They wanted a straight forward, friendly little thing that says naughty words and a few radical things against bush. DP are more hiphop than that. Didn't you know for starters that this is actually a mix tape? This is not the second album! It's an underground thing they are releasing before the real deal early next year!

Remember Folks, This is a MIXTAPE,

This album is obviously not as good as "Let's Get Free" which is one of the best hiphop albums of all time. But compared to all the other garbage out there it deserves a 5 STAR RATING. Otherwise, if their first album is a 5 then this would be a 3. Keep in mind that this is a mixtape, not a regular album. This is just a little something to hold the fans over cause we been antsy for some new stuff from dp. So their 2nd album is due out early 2003, tentatively Malcolm Xs b-day. Support dp, buy this mixtape. Unless you want fakers like Ja Rule to dominate.

The best mixtape ever made!!!,
By Nuisance "the rebel" (Miami) - See all my reviews

The heading is not a bold statement its the truth. While other rappers' mixtapes are all guns, drugs and which hoe did it with freddy kreuger last night, Dead Prez devotes mixtape time to give you insight and thought provoking rhymes. Standout Tracks: TURN OFF THE RADIO, THAT'S WAR, WE NEED A REVOLUTION, FOOD CLOTHES & SHELTER part 2, SOULJA LIFE MENTALITY(Soulja Slim RIP), GET UP, KNOW YOUR ENEMY, IT WAS WRITTEN, NO LOVE, THO IT UP, HIP HOP(RBG mix)etc. Filler: Sellin d.o.p.e.. Bottom Line: Dead prez's mixtapes are better than most rappers mixtapes and albums if you want to take it that far. On some songs they use other people's beats like the late Aaliyah's I need a resolution and Black Rob's Whoa but they put their on positive spin on these track so Im okay with it. Both mixtapes by Dead Prez are strongly recommended by me as well as their albums.

Every verse that Dead Prez spits is just adding to where hip-hop should be going. I don't agree with everything these guys say but they know how to state what they think is right. They don't come off as those [individuals] who stand on the block and kick knowledge but don't do nothing all day. They come off as proud black men with flaws trying to teach. The reason that they change up their beats is becasue everyone is not from New York. DP is big in the south. They want to be able to get their message out there. So don't hate because you don't like the beat.If anyone gets the album, remember that they live this. They just got arrestted for being black outside.Know your enemy.R.B.G for life.

RBG--Who's Ready, Who's Not?,
By Mystery Secret Shopper (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Turn Off the Radio Mixtape 1 (Audio CD)
I don't know what some of the other reviewers are talking about, this album is ESSENTIAL. Some folk are simply not ready for Dead Prez, that's all. Stic & M1 are unapologetic Truth Bearers (period). On this album no less than on "Let's Get Free". I STRONGLY recommend both albums to all TRUE Hip Hop heads who are tired of listening to the GARBAGE on the radio (TURN IT OFF!). This album is a challenge to many, namely those who ostentatiously put themselves out there like they are gangstas, yet are clueless and cowardly when it comes to reality, that is, when it comes to stepping up to & bucking the real enemy. Although I dig ALL the tracks, let me briefly review the best: #2 title track--a compelling admonition to scrap the garbage on the radio, we all know the classic examples--"I got a fat platinum chain, I've got this, I've got that". TURN OF THAT B S ! The only qualm I have about this track, which also shows up on track #6, is the little Apache sound effect, which I just personally didn't care for. Track #3 on point examples of what's really war, set to a nice beat. Track #4 "what I gotta do to make sure you understand, spit it on a beat by timberland???" Somebody's sleeping on these lyrics. Track #5- A fine tribute to Notorious BIG, as well as shouts out to freedom fighters known & unknown. Track #6- What a beat!!! Just drop that Apache sound effect. Short track beseeching the bigwigs to give back to their communities. #8- I cannot give enough props to this track, which you can dance to as well as THINK to. "Put me on the TV screen, and I'm gon' say the SAME THING." I heard ya! #9- "It's a war going on, the ghetto is a cage, they only give you 2 choices, be a rebel or a slave". Enough said. Track #10- Truth dropping yet again--"Know Your Enemy", "Don't be a lamb gettin' led to the slaughter", self-explanatory. #12- Very nice beat, nice expose of the ills of the "club". #13- Yeah, there SHOULD be awards given to those who are true warriors...like Dead Prez. #14- Take us back there! (albeit briefly) #15- appropriate treatment of drug issue & prison industrial complex, latter of which runs into track #16. Track #17- I love this track. Sounds good, feels good, teaches good. I LOVE the arrangement! Track #18, the hot track that introduced us to the RBG Soldier pair. Hip-Hop rbg mix. It's STILL bigger than Hip Hop "...my neck, my back, they put a noose on my neck & welps on my back." Love it!

A Rally Cry...keeps you moving,
By
This review is from: Turn Off the Radio Mixtape 1 (Audio CD)
I am a huge DP fan and this album did not disappoint....Let's be free was to put them out there and educate.....this album was more of a rally for a revolution....it was innovative for DP ...they used the knowledge of how brainwashed the music consumers are by beats but BS lyrics that's why DP recycled some beats and it made the whole album flow together......My favorites are "It's War", "It was Written"(which is for the reggae fans) and "Know your Enemy"....like I stated before for the TRUE DP fans out there,,,this album won't disappoint!

Solid Mix Tape,
By A Customer
This review is from: Turn Off the Radio Mixtape 1 (Audio CD)
Many people have waited for more then two years for a second album from Dead Prez. Although, "Turn off the Radio" is only a mix tape, it succeeds hyping up the fans for the album to come. Dead Prez haven't lost their edge and their style has only improved. Every Dead Prez fan should have this mix tape.

Starts Slow, but Really Heats up,
By
This review is from: Turn Off the Radio Mixtape 1 (Audio CD)
I liked this album. As the name said, I didn't listen to the Radio for weeks, because this album caught my attention. Although, it featured a lot of guest artist, the message in this seems to have grown stronger then in previous ones. The starting songs were pretty bad, but the middle and end of the CD really dispells that. As a previous reviewer said, the earlier parts are mostly old beats, with the DP revolutionary message, and most of these songs are pretty bad but after Food, Clothes and Shelter II starts the ride truly begans. Tracks like "Know your Enemy" and "Sellin' Dope" are great, and truly make this CD what it is. The only real problem is that, this feels underground, and very rushed, so I'd assume it was something made to keep die-hard fans occupied until the next real album comes out. |
