This album is amazing. I had heard of the name around, but I'd never actually listened to their music. I first heard them in my youth pastor's car... and I was hooked. I had been searching for a long time for a Christian band who had the sound of Linkin Park. I found this in 38th Parallel, but I have to say I like their sound better. 3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok
This album is way too short. Only 10 tracks are on this cd. So I don't know maybe I am just cynical. I hope that their next album is harder and longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard hitting music for fans of Linkin Park or Staind!, July 15, 2003
This review is from: Turn the Tides (Audio CD)
Every day I am looking for a new christian band to listen to, and for so long I've been looking for a Staind sound-a-like, I heard that 12 Stones was like Staind, wrong, they sound like Nickelback, which is pretty good because i like(d) Nickelback and Kutless which sounds kind of like Creed and very little like Staind but not completely. But I have finally stumbled upon 38th Parallel. This is a group I had heard on a CD sampler I bought at WalMart, and they sounded too mainstream to me. But I finally had the nerve to pick this up and I couldn't believe my ears. 38th Parallel while more like Limp Bizkit rap wise, has a good beat, great instruments and a good singer. The lyrics are uplifting (especially You Are My God, which is the best song on the album). I'll give you an explanation of each song

1. Hear My Cry- Starts out like a Staind song with some cool keyboards, and then it immediately jumps into a Linkin Park, rap verse. Pretty good track. 9/10

2. Turn the Tides- Sounds alot like Pillar, but it also sounds like Pax217. 10/10

3. Higher Ground- at first sounds dumb but once u give it a listen it is a very powerful worship song in a way. 9/10

4. Clouded- too short to even recognize. Like Linkin Park. 8/10

5. Who Am I?- Another Pillar sound-a-like. The rapper sounds a lot like Jimmy Pop, the lead singer of The Bloodhound Gang, its funny. 10/10

6. Horizon- the song that got me into the band. very cool. 10/10

7. State of Mind- sounds like Nickelback when it opens. Cool song. This is where they sound like Staind. 10/10

8. You Are My God- my favorite song! 10/10

9. Wither- Is Stryper in the house. Opens with a good little Stryper sounding solo and really pumps into a Staind grunge sound. 10/10

10. 3 Times Denied- Kind of like Linkin Staind. 9/10

Check this CD out you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great band from Iowa, April 3, 2003
This review is from: Turn the Tides (Audio CD)
This debut is smashing from the 1st track to the last track. They only have a slight similarity to Linkin Park all because of singing to rapping. There is a unique sequence in this band however, and that is the vocalist is not aggressive in his singing like the lead singer from Linkin Park and the lyrics are God spoken and God receiving messages. Beautiful guitar sounds in every track and most importantly is in every track, they do not sound the same. Every song on this CD id different combines harmonies, and melodies alike. In fact just how the way the lead singer sang in each song makes you want to repeat each song in your head until you go crazy. Lyrics were stunning, knowing that yes this is a brand new band, but no, they are not new Christians. "Hear My Cry" is simple it talks about a guy who is in need of help and crys out to God. "Horizon" is truly gifted saying that when life is tough in everyday goings, we should look up towards Heaven and know that God will come. Songs like "You Are My God" and "3 Times Denied" really leaves you stunned with percision timing and incredible key changes. An incredible debut from such a talented and gifted band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addicted, August 1, 2002

I admit, I am addicted to 38th Parallel. Even though they sound alot like Linkin Park, I think once you really listen to it, 38th Parallel has a much deeper, somewhat more complicated sound with many levels, with harmonies and keys that do not usually exist in your typical rock stuff.
All the songs are awesome, and after 2 weeks of listening to only this CD, I have not gotten tired of any of them. If I had to pick favorites, they would have to be "You Are My God", "Horizon", and "Clouded".
I predict many great things to come for this awesome band. It doesn't hurt any that they are all from a small Iowa town, just like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another beautifully done Christian rock album, June 20, 2005
By
This review is from: Turn the Tides (Audio CD)
Even though this is a one hit wonder album by a band now split up since 2003, it has to be said that this album is simply amazing. Like many other reviewers before me, every song is likeable and the riffs and vocals are pure bliss. My favourite songs on this album were three songs 'Horizon', 'Hear Me Cry' and 'Higher Ground'. The songs Horizon and Hear Me Cry made it to my New Years Party List and I listen to this album almost once every second day - it is that good. All the songs have merit and you can listen to it at home relaxing, with friends in the car, or at a party chilling with family. The reader must realize that whilst this band comes under the banner of Contemporary Christian rock group, it is simply more of a rock band that is geared up for young people with their messages of self-worth, hope and being one with God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passion for Christ, July 15, 2003

This review is from: Turn the Tides (Audio CD)
I went to college with two of the guys in the band when I was at Iowa State (Aaron and Shane). After watching them tour locally for a few months and hanging out with them, I got to know their hearts well...these guys love Christ and want to see Him made known in our generation! The lyrics on this album are probably some of the realest you will ever hear.

There is not one track on this CD that is lacking. Covering topics ranging from AIDS to spiritual renewal, Turn the Tides shows the band's diversity.

"For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than" 38th's Turn the Tides...5 out of 5 stars! ~am

5.0 out of 5 stars 38th parallel, June 13, 2003
This review is from: Turn the Tides (Audio CD)
well, wow. that's all i can really say about this band. and it took a looooong time for me to actually like them, i listened to them a little bit with my friend, but i never really liked it much, until i found myself downloading all of their songs. then, i had to buy the cd. here's my review...
1. hear my cry-amazing opener, sounds a lot like linkin park, but that's not bad, i like linkin park too.
2. turn the tides-captures the feel of the whole cd, "life sucks, the world is a bad place. but....Jesus is here for us." but it doesn't say it in a "daisies in the prarie" attitude.
3. higher ground-very melodic, one of my favorites, i love the mixture of the acoustic and electric guitars.
4. clouded-this song was what got me into the band, i love this song, very dark, but very hopeful. the riffs are hard hitting.
5. who am i?- great hip hop/hard rock song, also remeniscent of linkin park, great song.
6. horizon-this song is amazing, it has the perfect mix of hard rock, rap, and choral singing, it is beautiful. i love the lyrics as well.
7. state of mind-absolutely brilliant song, throughout the whole thing, both of the lead singers just play off each other, mixed with hard hitting guitar riffs, and lyrics that hit the soul. a wonderful song.
8. you are my god-this is, hands down, my favorite song in the entire world. it starts off with a melodic guitar riff, then, moves into talking of depressing things, but there is hope, at the end, the chorus is met with a screamed "show me now!" that just makes you close your eyes, and you get goosebumps.
9. wither-this song is extremely sad, as well as brilliantly written, perfect transfer of melodic singing, and hardcore rap/rock singing.
10. 3 times denied-great song, with a ton of energy, i love the lyrics as well, a great song. (sounds a lot like turn the tides)

all in all, this album gets 5 stars without question. i love this cd, i love this band. peace outside peoples!

This cd is AWESOME. Some people would say it sounds like a poor rip off of Linkin Park, but I have to say that Linkin Park could only hope to sound this good. Listening to the music, you have no doubt that this band has talent. And if you listen to the lyrics, there is no doubt that they LOVE GOD. But don't let that discurage you from buying this cd, it is awesome and you will be hearing from these good 'ole boys for some time to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Christian Rap/Rock CD, November 28, 2003
This review is from: Turn the Tides (Audio CD)
This is a very good, solid CD. People have compared them to Linkin Park and to some degree I agree but they're not exactly like them. They go in a different direction... a more rock approach without the samples and wierd sounds. Which doesn't mean it isn't great. They have the duel lead vocalists like Linkin Park and 311 that play off each other very well. The only problem I have with this CD is that is is kinda short... only 10 songs. I'm jonesin' for more 38th! I have to say that "You Are My God" is one of the best songs I've heard... the end really hits hard and puts a lump in my throat. Other great songs are "Horizon", "Wither", and "Who Am I"
