Book Description

December 29, 2005
"I was trying to get a cab one day near my apartment in Manhattan, and wasn't having any luck. In New York City, you know when a cabbie is looking for a fare because his light is on, so I didn't even bother raising my hand for all the unavailable, unlit cabs going by. But then it occurred to me: What if one of them had a broken light and the driver didn't know it? He'd be driving all over the city looking for someone to hail him, but no one would. Why? Because he was sending the wrong signal, inadvertently. Could it be that your own light is off?" --Nancy Slotnick

Have you tried every dating gimmick and almost (but not quite) given up hope? Nancy Slotnick is a professional dating coach whose program has helped hundreds of her private clients find love in six months or less. If you’re skeptical, you should be. There are no guarantees in life, but if you believe it can happen to you, and you’re ready to try something different, this is the book for you.

Nancy knows you don't need rules or endless theories--you need a strategy that works. With Nancy's Program, you will spend 15 hours a week on a targeted search for Mr. Right. If that sounds like a lot of time, consider the time you will want to spend with this person, once you meet him. Why not put in the time to find him? If you’ve wasted hours on internet searches that went nowhere, or if you’ve been hanging around, waiting for someone to notice how great you are, get ready to try a completely new approach. Nancy will show you how to truly and confidently put yourself out there and how to get men to notice you.

In Turn Your Cablight On, you’ll find Nancy’s expert tips, proven strategy, and invaluable advice on the male perspective. Nancy's husband Daniel Aferiat, a licensed psychotherapist in private practice in Manhattan, also gives his take on common dating situations and emotions in every chapter. If you’ve ever asked yourself why you’re still single when you have so much to offer, you’re about to find out how hundreds of women have made their own luck in love—and how you can, too.

Advanced Quotes:
"TURN YOUR CABLIGHT ON is an intelligent Program for finding out what you really want in a man, and then settling for nothing less. Nancy's advice is for women who are ready to take a few risks to end up in a great relationship, instead of sitting at home and waiting for it to happen."
--Alex Michel, the original “Bachelor”

"Nancy teaches women how to take control of the dating process without controlling the men. One thing we always hear from single men is that women don't see their point of view. Nancy really understands and translates the male perspective, and her instincts about them are right on."
--Adele Testani and Ken Deckinger, co-founders of HurryDate

"With her highbrow credentials, Nancy Slotnick, Harvard '89, lends an air of legitimacy to the oft-embarassing arena of forced fix-ups."
--The New York Post

"A great guide for those fabulous women out there who can't seem to find Mr. Right. Slotnick offers concrete advice for getting past the emotional and logistical barriers that unwittingly keep women from the relationships they seek."
--Laura Berman, PhD, Director of the Berman Center, Chicago and author of Secrets of the Sexually Satisfied Woman: 10 Keys to Unlocking Ultimate Pleasure

"A businesslike, philosophical yenta, who used her professional skills to help people navigate the New York dating scene."
--Joanna Weiss, The Boston Globe

2.0 out of 5 stars Not particularly well written; mostly a waste of time, August 31, 2006
While there are some decent ideas in here, most of it rehashes other - far better - (and far better written) dating books - and nothing about her "Program" is even remotely the miracle strategy implied in the promos. What this surprisingly naive Harvard-educated author, (also a real-life dating coach who shamelessly pitches her own services throughout) is saying boils down to the following news-flashes: Be available, be receptive, search actively, search intelligently, of course don't phone him, widen your horizons, always look your best, stay positive even when things are rough - in essence - put on a happy face in the right place and he'll come along. She also seems to be really out of touch in some areas - doesn't address many logistical issues such as dating when you have kids or living in areas where there just isn't much out there - and even endorses some questionable stuff that conflicts with her own advice in other chapters. Her ideas are also often surrounded by far too much lead prose and childish filler -- mostly meaningless celebrity references gleaned from television and pop culture - all apparently intended as relatable examples, but which are now mostly dated and make this book a total chore to read. It would seem to be much more informative to hear about everyday folks (names changed of course) from her own life experience as a dating coach and while running her meet-and-greet singles cafe in NY - deep, timeless wells that would seem to offer some intriguing examples. She also slags just a bit on the two all-time champ dating books - "The Rules" and "He's Just Not That Into You" - saying that while both make some good points, there should be some room for gray. Well maybe in rare cases that's so - but you know what - ? - my experience now over the last five years on the mid-life singles scene tells me that those two best-sellers (along with Sherry Argov's books) aren't just hilarious, demystifying, snappy reads - they have all absolutely nailed it. While this book does however benefit from some sidebar perspective from her psychotherapist husband, otherwise there's not much new here and it's not nearly as fun or as illuminating as the promos imply.

5.0 out of 5 stars some solid ideas, some scary ones, June 25, 2006

This review is from: Turn Your Cablight On: Get Your Dream Man in 6 Months or Less (Hardcover)
I was both encouraged and then slight ly alarmed by
some of Nancy Slotnick's theories about dating. Positives:
her encouraging, go for broke, common sense aphorisms,
i.e. don't date beneath yourself, don't rely on internet dating et al
Negatives: some "quaint", quasi stalkerish concepts, such as
give "vulnerable" eye contact (eh? I didn't get that one), get a
new date each week (what if you want to get to know someone
for a while, wait there's no time for that! snap snap!) don't ask him
out (calling all "Rules" readers) and don't touch him (that is "controlling
behavior" she implies.) I just felt too straitjacketed to adhere to these
tenets. My ultimate dating advice: do what feels right to you, it's really
the only sustainable notion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Advice, December 30, 2005

This review is from: Turn Your Cablight On: Get Your Dream Man in 6 Months or Less (Hardcover)
I just got this yesterday and read it in one day. This is an excellent dating book with a lot of pretty great ideas, the best dating book I've read in a long time. It's about defining yourself and positioning yourself so you can attract the guy who's right for you and stop wasting time. Just the chapter on translating guy talk really opened my eyes about the things I do wrong when I get involved with someone new. It's also unusual for a dating advice book in that it's so well written and zips right along. The writing is fast and sharp and funny and it reads like your friend is sitting you down and giving you some necessary, no-nonsense advice. I highly recommend it to anyone who has lost hope of finding the right person for them, because the author of this book really taught me something new about relationships.
