Book Description

July 2003
The TurnAround Mom: A Feel It, Heal It Guide to Help Survivors of Family Addiction and Abuse Stop the Pain and Raise Happy Children
By Carey Sipp
Foreword by George Gallup, Jr., of the Gallup Organization

"Millions of parents like me grew up in addiction and abuse. When we have our own children, we want to give them a great life and parent them well. But if you didn't experience sane and sober parenting yourself, it's like asking a two-year-old to program a Palm Pilot(R). This book will help parents who grew up in addiction and abuse learn new ways to live and parent so they don't repeat the damaging cycle. It will help fill that gap of information between growing up in the confusion and pain of addiction, abuse, and toxic intensity, and gently lead the way to a home life that helps their children thrive. "

The TurnAround Mom is based on personal experience; seven years of research into parenting, reparenting, addiction, abuse and recovery; a year of working with a parenting expert, and my participation in more than a dozen workshops on parenting and personal growth. I have boiled down the best of the best information from hundreds of sources and made them available as tips at the end of each chapter. Chapter headings include: Live a life of extreme self care; Create a strong support structure, Create a sane and loving family life; Make better decisions; Create and keep strong boundaries.

The TurnAround Mom is being embraced by therapists and pastoral counselors. Dr. Laura is featuring the book in the February, 2002, issue of her magazine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Help For the Addict in All of Us Parents, March 4, 2002
Not in hypothetical but in real, concrete, terms the author talks about her own addictions to things that interfere with her being the loving supportive parent she wishes to be . She sites reasons and background for her own shortcomings but has obviously decided that all of this isn't written in concrete, that with a little thoughtful quiet time for herself and a lot of thinking about what is really important there is time even for a single, working, Mom, to be wholly present in the present with love. The book is never saccharine, is always straightforward about the author's shortcomings, and even for parents who are now grandparents, it's engrossing, delightful, and insightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a goldmine of helpful information, February 18, 2002
The TurnAround Mom is one of the most helpful, practical ACOA books in print. Carey Sipp zeroes in on the painful reality of adulthood; we parent our children with the same dysfunction of our parents unless we teach ourselves differently. Her incredible wordsmithing allows us to go with her as she bravely revisits incidences she experienced growing up with alcoholic/enabler parents. She causes us to remember our own painful experiences as she shares vignettes of the abuse she suffered. But she doesn't leave us there with aching memories; instead, she follows each memory with two more illustrations of how she learned healthier and healthier ways of parenting her own children. The overall message from this book is: I was a victim of my childhood circumstances, but I can choose to make things better for myself and my children. The TurnAround Mom reads like a novel as it teaches us do-able steps toward healthier parenting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving yourself from the inside out!, May 11, 2007
This review is from: The Turnaround Mom (Paperback)
Carey Sipp captures the essence of saving your "self" to save the life of others...her children. You think this story only happens in movies. This is the real thing. Overcoming emotional abuse from growing up with her father's alcoholism, Carey shares a story of unique survival. With two children by her side, she overcomes wounds that would have left many too hurt to heal. Carey shares both concrete suggestions and inspirational ideas to encourage those who may be facing similar addiction histories or current lifestyles. Her spiritual and physical strength has the ability to resonate on so many levels. Every chapter brings you closer to finding your own truth...and feeling proud of living it.
