Threatened by impending bankruptcy and saddled with an unpopular line of cars, the Ford Motor Company was struggling for its survival in the early 1980s. From interviews with many of the managers who contributed to Ford's recovery, Shook, author of Honda: An American Success Story ( LJ 3/15/89), has chronicled the story of the company's fall from popularity, its bold decision to launch the Taurus, and the continuing development of Ford as a company driven by customer needs. This is a good case study that illustrates the changes in the worldwide automobile industry described in James Womack's excellent The Machine That Changed the World ( LJ 10/1/90).
