4.0 out of 5 stars A quick and fun intro to the Shadow Falls series March 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In Born at Midnight we meet Della Tsang, Kylie Galen's vampire roommate at Shadow Falls camp. But Della wasn't always a vampire. This is her story.

***

Turned at Dark is a quick, fun and at times humorous short story about how Della became a vampire and how she ended up at Shadow Falls. It is a prequel to the full length book, Born at Midnight, which will be releasing in two weeks.

This is a great way to introduce this new series, get a feel for the author's writing style and meet one of the more interesting characters from Born at Midnight. And it will give readers the opportunity to learn a little more about Della and why she acts as she does.

As this is releasing prior to the first book, it can obviously be read without having read Born at Midnight, although I'm glad I read it afterward. I already liked Della - she is one of my favorite characters - and was therefore much more interested in hearing about her transformation than I might have been had I not previously been introduced.

The Turned at Dark eBook includes a sneak peek of Born at Midnight.

Note: Born at Midnight is an amazing book (5 stars)! Definitely a must read if you love this short story and worth a peek even if you only just like it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting hook March 16, 2011

I read this pre-quel to the upcoming series within a couple hours. I found it funny in parts and interesting enough for me to bookmark the upcoming release of the next book(or 1st book, however you look at it)to read & purchase it when it comes out.

Della Tsang is strong-willed, thick-headed, and independent. She is trying to live up to her Chinese father's high expectations of her while still being her own person and not disappointing herself. Logically, she knows ghosts don't exist, at least until she sees the cousin whose funeral she attended the year before running into a dark alley. When she follows him, she finds herself in the middle of a gang-war, and Chen, her cousin, saves her. Unknowingly, he also turns her. Chen is a vampire, and Della is about to become one as well. Forced to admit that not everything is so logical, she must now decide if she will fake her own death as he did and follow him to live in a clan or if she will travel to Shadow Falls and hope for a more normal life.
This is a super duper short novella that showcases the story of how Della turned into the vampire she now is. The story is very simple and linear. I love how the change is written like a disease. Part of me feels like it could've been written to take up a little bit more time, but at the same time, it was written just well enough that you understand it without getting bored.

Della is a nice character. She is strong and cynical, trying to live up to her father's super high expectations of her. She is starting to tire of it though, and is about ready to just run away from it all. She wants to move in with her boyfriend Lee and just start her own life. Living up to her own expectations instead of someone else. You don't get to go deep into hers, or anyone's characters, with how short the story is, but she is a good character that I am looking forward to learning more about.

However, after beginning Born at Midnight, the first real book in the series, this novella becomes a massive disappointment.

"She had about as much energy as a snail on Xanax, skinny-dipping in a cup of chamomile tea."

I had actually found this book as a free download at B&N weeks before stumbling upon Born at midnight. and to be honest.. didn't make the connection until part way through B.A.M !! It was fate. After Finishing C.C. Hunter's first book in the Shadow Falls series I HAD to have more, and lucky me I had this to fall back on!

With the same lighthearted and fun feel that we get from Born at Midnight C.C. let's us in on Della's tale of how she was turned into a vampire and made her way to Shadow fall's camp.

I can only hope that C.C. Hunter continues with the short stories, set aside on their own, or mixed into the rest of the stories. I loved getting more incite into a character I loved and want more!

Even if you don't have an e-reader you can download this story to your computer or mobile device from B&N or other sources. And I recommend that you do... like.. now?!.... After reading Born at Midnight of course :)

C.C. Hunter is the author of the new Young Adult Paranormal series Shadow Falls published by St. Martin's Press.

C.C. grew up in Alabama, where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and regularly rescued potential princes, in the form of Alabama bullfrogs, from her brothers. Today, she's still fascinated with lightning bugs, mostly wears shoes, but has turned her focus to rescuing mammals. She now lives in Texas with her four rescued cats, one dog, and a prince of a husband, who for the record, is so not a frog. When she's not writing, she's reading, spending time with her family, or is shooting things-with a camera, not a gun.

C.C. Hunter is a pseudonym. Her real name is Christie Craig and she also writes humorous romantic suspense romance novels for Grand Central. www.christie-craig.com

C.C. would love to hear from you. Because of deadlines, it may take her a day or so to get back with you, but she will reply. cc@cchunterbooks.com
