3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful People
I am so thrilled to be able to have this book in my home. The people it represents are so strong and couragious. I was glad to see that so many wonderful photographers took place in this cause. A nice coffee table book. My friends come over and they always are a bit sceptical in looking at the book, but once the first page is turned...they are intralled. I'm not sure...

Each photo is unique to the woman and the photographer. The stories are as varied as the women themselves. Women of all ages and backgrounds are included to show just how indiscriminate cancer can be and how strong and determine women are. I would recommend this book for any woman going through the ups and downs of cancer treatment to remind her just how beautiful bald can be.

I am a Ovarian Cancer Survivor & loved this book. It shows us that even though we have lost our hair we still have beauty. The stories were wonderful. NOCC donated these books to infusion labs. I know that men & women saw this book & it helped them know they were not alone. I recommend this book to everyone.

I received this book as a gift and what a wonderful and thoughtful gift it has been! While enduring chemotherapy, I, as many people do, lost my hair. I chose not to wear a wig, scarf or hat. And to see that there are other women who are not afraid to wear their beautiful baldness with pride and determination made me want to read and look some more. Each photo tells a different story and really shows that cancer does not discriminate.

Every cancer center, radiation center, physician's office should have a copy on display. It truly is inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift, June 16, 2006

I purchased 2 copies of Turning Heads -- One was for my mother who lost her hair during chemotherapy to treat her Lymphoma. For a lot of women, the hair loss hits them the hardest because even if they feel well and are carrying on as normal, it is physical evidence that they are, in fact, sick. It brings them back to the reality of cancer. I wanted to remind her that she is beautiful no matter what, and that she shouldn't be ashamed to leave the house simply because of her appearance. She received the book 2 days ago and loved it...she loved the pictures, but especially the stories. It's perfect for anyone who needs a little lifting of the spirits. The other copy I told her to leave in the waiting room of her cancer center....if you haven't been to a chemo room or cancer center before, it's one of the most depressing places you could ever be. I wanted the book to reach as many people as possible, and I hope it does. I highly recommend this as a present for someone who is going through chemo and not quite feeling like themselves. remind them that bald is beautiful, too!

I have just two simple words to share with author Jackson Hunsicker for her efforts in creating this book. Thank You!

I know that the author put herself at great financial risk to create this book and I hope she now is recovering all of her expenses and then some. I hope you make millions Jackson. This book was just what I needed. I found it first in my oncologist's office and then I bought myself a copy and then I bought my aunt a copy and then my neighbors came by and took my copy for friends of theirs. Everybody knows somebody who's had a cancer diagnosis.

Every woman diagnosed is now experiencing one of her most vulnerable moments--a diagnosis of cancer quite possibly steals your future, frightens you beyond believe, and its harsh treatments rob you of your beauty, your pride--your hair. But that just simply isn't true. Many cancers are cured. The fear eventually wanes. And the hair will grow back. But in the meantime, being bald is beautiful. Witness the perfect scalp, the shape and character of the head, the prominence of the eyes and the lips, and admire those cheekbones. Women who don't have hair have nothing to fear for they are all experiencing a new level of beauty and this book with its glorious portraits is affirmation.

I met a woman this past summer. My hair was coming back. Her's was still gone. She was hiding beneath an ugly wig. I encouraged her to remove her wig. "Oh, look how beautiful you are," I told her. And her smile radiated. We woman, we're so much more than just a head of hair, we're strong, vibrant, radiant creatures and our hair is just that, hair.

Jackson Hunsicker THANK YOU so much for making me proud to go bald (I paid $600 for my wig. The insurance wouldn't reimburse it. I never wore it. Anybody want it?)

This review is from: Turning Heads: Portraits of Grace, Inspiration, and Possibilities (Paperback)
I bought this book for my mother, a breast cancer survivor who had a hard time adjusting to life without her hair. She loved it so much she bought copies of the book and took them to the oncology department for other women to be inspired while enduring their treatments. A must-have for any woman who has gone through this experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turning hearts while turning heads, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Turning Heads: Portraits of Grace, Inspiration, and Possibilities (Paperback)
How do you find the right words to comfort a loved one confronting the trauma of a cancer diagnosis? Unless you've been there, you can't. The stories of the women, both extraordinary and ordinary, in Turning Heads allowed me to offer solace, comfort, and humor to loved ones with words my own voice would fail to find. I have given this book to several people, and it has helped them in profound ways. Not only is this a work that turns the conventional idea of beauty on its head, it's a book that turns hearts -- from fear and despair to healing and hope. Buy it and give it to anyone you know confronting the fear and challenges of cancer. It's the best thing a friend can do.

I LOVE this book! I stumbled upon it during my chemotherapy for breast cancer and I was inspired by the beauty and courage of the women photographed, in fact, I scheduled a photo session with an artist I know to take photos of me without hair....it was empowering to stand bare and beautiful before the camera. I heartily recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Has Changed My Life, November 29, 2007
This review is from: Turning Heads: Portraits of Grace, Inspiration, and Possibilities (Paperback)
The beautiful and powerful messages the photos exuded from the pages of this book triggered a life altering change in me. I am a bald woman afflicted with Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (Scarring Alopecia). Although, I acquired my bald crown for a different reason than the beautiful and courageous women in this book, it helped me to realize that I was not the only woman who understood the day in the life a bald women in our society. In and of itself, that's a pretty heavy crown to carry each day. More importantly, the images and stories about these women, who were afflicted with cancer, and were bald, taught me a huge lesson. I was amazed with how beautiful these women looked in the photos despite the fact that they were diagnosed with a disease such as cancer. The images in these photos portrayed beautiful visions of hope, strength, intelligence, grace and inspiration. The purchase of this book changed how I viewed myself as a bald woman. There was the "Me" before the purchase of this book and the "Me" after this book. The book can give anyone afflicted with a life altering change the encouragement and inspiration they are searching for. Thank you for this book.
