Okay, some of us are way too old to be reading this stuff now. But I sure am glad that Mr. Baldwin is still writing improbable space opera. (And made it even moe improbable and enjoyable with this chapter of the Helmsman. Thank you for keeping Wilf alive.

So good it was hard to put down so I could go to bed and get some sleep... Would highly recommend it.

Baldwin does generally write fast paced, suspend the disbelief adventures combining derring-do with beautiful women and, above all, lots of military style action.

However, I found "The Turning Tide" to contain lots of filler material and minimal action, and, frankly, at three quarters of the way through it becomes extremely weird.

Worst, because of the filler stuff, it barely makes progress developing the progress in the war.

I feel that Baldwin has cheated us and demand that the follow-on book gets back to the main story line.

The Helmsman returns in Baldwin's latest book. I have been waiting for the next book. I have read and reread the the series and enjoy it very much. Bill's style is Bill's style and I enjoy it.

It's been a long fifteen years for readers, but only two years of misery for Wilf Brim as he struggles to overcome the stigma of an unfair court martial which stripped him of Fleet rank. Of course, nothing can keep a Carescrian down for long, so before you know it he's off for a whole string of new adventures and a plot twist in mid-book that will probably blow a lot of peoples' minds.

This book is precisely what it purports to be: a fun romp through a well-loved and well-developed universe with cameos from nearly every beloved character developed through the entire series. I sincerely hope it isn't a finale, and there are a lot of hooks and set-ups that could easily feed one more tale, but Mr. Baldwin has a number of other projects now. I found completion of the Turning Tide bittersweet, for there are still unanswered questions, burning fuses and loose ends. What do you say, Mr. Baldwin? One more to wrap everything with a bow while the story is fresh in your mind?

If you ever loved space opera or carefree adventure, this is a book for you. If you're a literary critic or a cynic, stay well away. It's simply not your genre.

According to Bill's website ([...]) the completed book was sent to the printer November 1, 2011. Hopefully it will be out soon!

Anyway, the author has not even finished writing this book yet, so it's obviously never been published.

We all hope Bill will finish this year (2009). Many of us have been waiting over a decade, but you can't rush a good book!
