Fun in plastic form,
By Ben M. (beautiful Madison, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Turnpike Diaries (Audio CD)
The boys have done it again.Originally hailing from Stavanger, Norway, the 5-piece's (made up of Boots, Honda, Leroy, Race, and Stone) self-titled debut CD found its way into my heart after seeing them open for Semisonic a couple years ago, and their new Turnpike Diaries has followed suit. While many would tend to cast the GP into the generic sea of rock n' roll, it is their distinct funk groove which persists throughout the length of the album and bobs them to the surface. Funk however, is not the only genre that The Getaway People have mastered-- this disc has a generous dash of hip-hop, jazz, and dub thrown into the mix, creating a truly unique sound. The boys' hard work of logging miles and miles while on tour in support of their first release paid off big time, having forged friendships with great musicians, three of which appear on Turnpike Diaries. They include rapper Rahzel from the Roots, fiddler Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews' Band, and Darryl Jennifer from Bad Brains. Each lends another tantalizing flavor to the GP's musical smorgasbord. My favorite tracks start right from the first song, Six Pacs, a bouncy, happy-go-lucky tune which I personally think best represents the GP sound. Come Love Me stands out not just because of Rahzel's contribution, but also due to Leroy's perfect beats and samples and the catchy melody. On All About It, a background brass section blends in perfectly with a sublime acoustic guitar line while Honda's keyboard skips along playfully in unison. Additionally, the hidden track is a wonderful reprise of my favorite track off the first album...you get to find that out on your own though! I can't say enough about the boys-- they are my favorite musical escape from the monotony of today's mainstream Top 40. Their fusion of different genres is perfectly balanced, and cannot be duplicated. Get this disc today-- it'll magically get stuck in your player for years to come. Catch them in concert too, it's a guaranteed good time.

mmmmmm!,

I can't top what Ben said, but I can say that this album absolutely rocks! When Honda said on his audio message on their website about everyone in the world should buy this album...everyone really should! "Six Pacs" is just sendin' the love, and if it can be a theme song for a WB tv show, then it has to be good. ;) Some of my other favorites on the album: "Deceived By An Angel". It almost makes me cry everytime I hear it, but it's so pretty. I can't stop playing it! "All About It". Just about being "all about it" in the world, and not having to change to be in the "in crowd". I absolutely love this album, and these guys rock my world! BUY IT!

And that's saying alot, because I LOVED the first album. This album will not disappoint you! You will love these jams the first time you hear them--they are super catchy and very clever, just like the first cd. A great CD to just chill with, drive to, or party to! I love it!
