5.0 out of 5 stars Fun in plastic form
The boys have done it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent exercise in style, but doesn't quite work
It's soulful dance rock in the style of the Rolling Stones, but it rolls smoother than the stones, and the lead singer doesn't have as good of a voice. The problem with this recording is that the songs don't quite stick as well as they should because they're so smooth and attribute that to the production it's so smooth, and I think the band would fair better with a...

The boys have done it again.

Originally hailing from Stavanger, Norway, the 5-piece's (made up of Boots, Honda, Leroy, Race, and Stone) self-titled debut CD found its way into my heart after seeing them open for Semisonic a couple years ago, and their new Turnpike Diaries has followed suit. While many would tend to cast the GP into the generic sea of rock n' roll, it is their distinct funk groove which persists throughout the length of the album and bobs them to the surface. Funk however, is not the only genre that The Getaway People have mastered-- this disc has a generous dash of hip-hop, jazz, and dub thrown into the mix, creating a truly unique sound.

The boys' hard work of logging miles and miles while on tour in support of their first release paid off big time, having forged friendships with great musicians, three of which appear on Turnpike Diaries. They include rapper Rahzel from the Roots, fiddler Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews' Band, and Darryl Jennifer from Bad Brains. Each lends another tantalizing flavor to the GP's musical smorgasbord.

My favorite tracks start right from the first song, Six Pacs, a bouncy, happy-go-lucky tune which I personally think best represents the GP sound. Come Love Me stands out not just because of Rahzel's contribution, but also due to Leroy's perfect beats and samples and the catchy melody. On All About It, a background brass section blends in perfectly with a sublime acoustic guitar line while Honda's keyboard skips along playfully in unison. Additionally, the hidden track is a wonderful reprise of my favorite track off the first album...you get to find that out on your own though!

I can't say enough about the boys-- they are my favorite musical escape from the monotony of today's mainstream Top 40. Their fusion of different genres is perfectly balanced, and cannot be duplicated. Get this disc today-- it'll magically get stuck in your player for years to come. Catch them in concert too, it's a guaranteed good time.

5.0 out of 5 stars mmmmmm!, July 31, 2000

I can't top what Ben said, but I can say that this album absolutely rocks! When Honda said on his audio message on their website about everyone in the world should buy this album...everyone really should! "Six Pacs" is just sendin' the love, and if it can be a theme song for a WB tv show, then it has to be good. ;) Some of my other favorites on the album: "Deceived By An Angel". It almost makes me cry everytime I hear it, but it's so pretty. I can't stop playing it! "All About It". Just about being "all about it" in the world, and not having to change to be in the "in crowd". I absolutely love this album, and these guys rock my world! BUY IT!

And that's saying alot, because I LOVED the first album. This album will not disappoint you! You will love these jams the first time you hear them--they are super catchy and very clever, just like the first cd. A great CD to just chill with, drive to, or party to! I love it!

The problem with this recording is that the songs don't quite stick as well as they should because they're so smooth and attribute that to the production it's so smooth, and I think the band would fair better with a slightly rawer sound. There are still really good pop songs like:Six Pacs, Come Love Me, Oh, How She Gave Me Love, and the song about an angel. I wouldn't recommend the album to anyone, though. Fans of the short-lived series "Young Americans" might want to download "Six Pacs" because it was the very catchy them song.

The ska/pop/funk tunes in this cd will have you dancing all night long. You may have heard the infectious cut "There She Goes" on the zany FOX hit "Malcolm in the Middle" or in the cheerleading hit "Bring It On." "Good Life" is also a favorite. Buy it for a great listen, keep it for a good disc!

4.0 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure, November 8, 2000
This review is from: The Turnpike Diaries (Audio CD)
This isn't the most complex or challenging record ever made, but it sure sounds good with the windows down and miles to go. I also have a hard time not liking an album that a member of Bad Brains appears on (although they sound NOTHING like Bad/Soul Brains.) The music is noisy pop, with a lot of glossed production that adds to some tracks, but some sounds are over-produced. The horns and such on "Here She Comes Again" works well, but in other places the 'kitchen sink' approach backfires. Still, it's a fun disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dare I say, better than their last album..!, July 31, 2000

Turnpike Diaries, the newest effort from the Getaway People, shines as an example of what most pop music should strive to be. Like on their Self-Titled debut album, Turnpike Diaries finds the 5-piece band deftly weaving threads of hip-hop, rock, jazz, and even a little reggae, throughout the entire album. Standout tracks include "Six Pacs," "There She Goes," and the uncharacteristic ballad "Deceived by an Angel" (Perhaps the only GP track on which one could say Boots actually 'croons'). If you enjoyed tracks like "She Gave Me Love," "Plastic People," or "Chocolate" off of their first album, then this album comes highly recommended. OTHER RECOMMENDED LISTENING: Digable Planets, Dave Matthews Band, Beck

4.0 out of 5 stars Where would they be without a little love?, June 20, 2001

I am a huge Dave Matthews Band fan. My brother is too. But when he bought this CD, I had to burn myself a copy. It's pretty cool. It's not the best, but it's really good. And there are 12 tracks, but only 10 are listed. A remix of "She Gave Me Love" is by far the best track. Other highlights:

Six Pacs (1) Come Love Me (3) Decieved By an Angel (4) All About It (6) and Boyd Tinsley plays on "Open Your Mind"

Solid Album.

I bought this albumn because I had heard the song six pacs on the show young americans. I had never heard of the getaway people before this as I live in england, but based on this CD alone I know I will be buying there other stuff, and any future albumns. The best songs are definetly six pacs, there she goes, and the unlisted remix of she gives me love. Though the other songs on the albumn are just as good.
