The dirty blond hair is the same, the body posture is also the same, and there are touches in the voice that have a similar genetic connection, but Devon Allman has toiled long and hard to establish his own musical identity, separate from his legendary dad, Gregg Allman.

In fact, Allman, who was raised by his mom (Shelley, not Cher) in Texas, took up the guitar on his own, and did not ... Read more in Amazon's Devon Allman Store

Product Description

Gregg Allman s famous son presents his first solo CD for Ruf Records after a successful tour and release with the Royal Southern Brotherhood!

Member of Royal Southern Brotherhood, whose debut spent several weeks on the Billboard Blues Chart, peaking at #5!

After spending more than a decade with Honeytribe and Royal Southern Brotherhood, the vocalist/guitarist (Gregg's son) has stepped out with a solo album that tells his personal stories. Turquoise is well-crafted, more reflective than fiery, and soulful. Jerry Shriver-USA Today

Guitarist Devon Allman makes music that is inspired by the blues ... and that s about all he has in common with his famous father, Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. Musically best described as Muddy Waters meets Sun Ra, the younger Allman finds inspiration in a wealth of influences, from Memphis soul and the guitar-driven blues-rock of the 1970s to jazz and R&B. --About.COM

Royal Southern Brotherhood unites two legendary roots-rock bloodlines along with a rising star guitarist and an in-the-pocket rhythm section for one of the most highly anticipated albums of the past decade. --Blues Revue

4.0 out of 5 stars A Shade of Blue February 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Devon Allman may garner comparisons to his father Gregg Allman for obvious reasons, but his music is only slightly tinged with attributes of his father's music. "Turquoise" shows that Devon indeed stands as his own artist with a style that is inspired by rock and blues history.

Devon's style seems to switch between Southern Rocker with a little flair and contemporary blues. I personally enjoy the bluesy numbers as I feel his voice and style is better suited to those tracks. The upbeat rocker type songs seem to get muddled with a feel that is familiar, and overplayed for me.

Devon is adept in all capacities, but I feel like he really shines when given a chance to show his guitar playing and the softer side of his voice. This is apparent on a few tracks here:

"Time Machine," A slower song, with jazzy guitar playing and a catchy beat to it. Devon's voice is gravelly in a remarkably smooth and affecting quality. It doesn't build throughout the song, but shows his best qualities.

"Stop Dragging my Heart Around," My favorite track on the album. Mid-paced in a Tom Petty meets "Stones" kind of way. Great singing by Samantha Fish, her voice accompanies Devon's brilliantly. I love the feel of this song and I really wish Samantha contributed more to the album as her voice blends well with Devon's.

"Yadira's Lullaby" was a pleasant surprise. Devon's guitar playing is smooth, peaceful and driving. It is a welcome break from the constant, sometimes grating qualities that are on the rest of the album.

In honesty, I find that Devon's lyricism needs work. Maybe I've been listening to too much Chris Stapleton and old time bluegrass music but much of Allman's lyrics come across as on the nose and cheesy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devon Allman music is captivating! February 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I've had the pleasure of seeing Devon perform on both Rock Legends Cruises. After the 1st cruise I thought he was very good... but after seeing him perform 13 months later I have to say he is stunning. The emotion he pours into the lyrics, vocals, and guitar playing is at a whole new level. As a professional concert photographer I have photographed thousands of performances. Devon's performance in the Platinum Theater on the Rock Legends Cruise 2 had me so mesmerized that I had difficulty in tearing the camera away from my face. The excitement and emotion in Devon's music is addicting. You have been warned! I'd buy 2 copies of this CD if I were you... you will probably wear the silver off the 1st one very quickly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Turqouise/ Cool Blues March 2, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's been a couple of weeks since I have received my copy of Turquoise by Devon Allman. The first time I saw and met Devon he was playing with his band "Honeytribe," in a small town park in Georgia. I was struck by his playing, singing and overall humble spirit.
Wanting to hear more this artist, I followed him with the group, "Royal Southern Brotherhood. Again I saw Devon's generosity of playing in addition to his trademark Bluesy/Soulful tones that continued to ring out. Which leads me to Turquoise.

With Turquoise, Devon introduces himself to the world chronicling his life in the music industry, love and fatherhood.
Devon shows his talent as a great songwriter who can frame the image with his writing and drive the song emotionally with his music.
The opening song, "When I Left Home<" starts with a slide guitar, stirring images of a bus or a train ride to New York City with the youthful dream of conquering the world!
The next song, "Don't Set Me Free," has a couple of poignant lines at the start, "I see your empty stares at the ceiling, then you bring them on down to me, look at me as cold as winter, like I'm some kinda disease, well I'm sorry we don't have champagne..." this captures the essence of so many relationship when love goes wrong and maybe they loved you for the wrong reason. Later in "Strategy," he writes a similar line "..."You use your poker face on me when I'm ready to deal all my cards," it seems like he is ready to love again but is unsure.
The rest of the CD is wonder too, his cover with Samantha Fish was awesome and as a Tom Petty fan, I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Devon Allman Arrives! April 24, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This young man has lived a life that most of us will never know.
Being under the shadow of a famous father brings unearthly expectations
that would send most of us to cower in the shadows.
Devon Allman has accepted who is and taken his life and music into his own hands, and beautiful music it is!
Turquoise brims with hope and melody. "When I left home" is rocking and honest.
Strong vocals, solid heartfelt guitar playing and stories of life and love from a full time touring musician.
Sometimes you have to get away from it all and Devon takes you with him on Turquoise.
Lots more in store for this amazing artist!

It's a musical journey from start to finish. Sounds very personal. I hear these songs in my head when no music is playing. HE would be a superstar if it wasn't blues-rock.
