About Turquoise Jewelry

History

The word "turquoise" was derived from the French term "pierre turquoise," meaning "stone of Turkey." This was after a 16th century European misconception that the stones originated in Turkey, when in fact they were first discovered in Persia. Turquoise is formed over millions of years with a chemical reaction when water leaks into rocks containing copper and aluminum minerals. Experts believe Turquoise was first mined in 6000 B.C. by ancient Egyptians and today it is mined in countries all around the world, including, China, Iran, the United States and Tibet.

Turquoise jewelry was first discovered within Egyptian tombs that date back to 3500 B.C. Cultures around the world have embraced the tradition of turquoise jewelry in the belief that it possesses healing and protective powers. While turquoise jewelry continues to be worn by many who believe it will attract money, luck and love, today, it is also a prevalent fashion accessory and serves as a December birthstone, as well as the stone for the fifth and eleventh wedding anniversaries.

Types of Turquoise

Turquoise may range in color from light blue to green. It may contain a variety of natural definitions, from white to black, which add a one-of-a-kind look to each stone. While the variances in color and matrix do not affect the value of the stone, there are properties that make some turquoise more expensive than others, most likely color uniformity and vividness. Turquoise jewelry is often treated in order to bring out the vibrant color and radiance of each stone.

Caring For Your Turquoise Jewelry

Like all natural gemstones, turquoise can be damaged if not cared for properly. Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth, drying after washing. Avoid scratches by storing separate from other jewelry. Avoid exposure to oils, perfumes, and chemicals that may affect the stone’s vivid color.

I love this bracelet and hope to get the matching necklace but it just barely stays on my wrist. I usually wear a 7 inch bracelet and since this is a stretch band I thought it would be on the small side but it is more on the large side. It is very attractive and has very nice tiger eyes and pearls. The turquoise pieces are larger than the other stones and add a nice contrast to the more delicate nature of the pearls and tiger eyes. I would recommend this piece for people who like this color combination and natural stones but if you have smaller wrists than a usual size 7 then this will not fit you.

Too big September 17, 2010
By Tyler
Color Name:turquoise|Amazon Verified Purchase
With this style of bracelet, I expect it to be fairly fitted to my wrist, like a watch. I hate bracelets that dangle. This bracelet is too big for my taste in that it hangs loosely on my wrist (and I am not small boned). With all the stones, it's also fairly heavy, so it's not the kind of bracelet you want dangling around, and when it dangles it makes a lot of noise. Having said that, though, the stones are nice looking and substantial - not cheap. I find that if I cross the strands over each other I can get it to stay in place, although it doesn't look as nice as it otherwise would.

This is a wonderful piece of jewelry, at an astonishing price. It was love at first sight, but upon opening I noticed that one of the elastic cords holding one of the strands together was broken. When I tried to return it, I found that while I could return it for a refund, I could not return it for exchange because the item was out of stock. So not wanting to part with it (it's THAT yummy!) I took it to the local bead shop for replacement of the broken cord. But they found that the ends of the cord are glued inside the largest stone, and the piece could therefore not be restrung. Haven't decided what to do yet -- will probably have the bead shop make me something new out of it, without the large stone -- but I would not hesitate to buy another one should they come back into stock. I didn't, BTW, find it too heavy, as another reviewer said. You'll know it's there, but so will everybody else ... and isn't that the point of "statement" pieces?

You get what you pay for!
The price was right. However, the quality was cheap. Could have done better myself with the product I have! Stone was cheap. Should have been tumbled.
