This review is from: Turquoise Jewelry (Paperback)
If you want a picture book, this one is excellent. Nearly every page is a full color large photgraph.
There are a few interesting historical facts laid out regarding turquoise and turqoise jewelry. A short discussion of mines is included and a short item regarding jewelry setting techniques. There are some cataloging of various Native American tribal jewelry styles and a mention of turquoise jewelry made in other countries. There are some references to Jewelry designers in the picture titles. There are some comments regarding fake turquoise.
The biggest drawback I see, is that there is NO mention at all of how to discern if your piece of turquoise is real or fake, nor is there any discussion of how to determine the origin of any of the styles in order to identify a piece you may have. No "maker's marks" are listed at all. I was disappointed in that regard. Neither is there any reference at all to price ranges for the various items shown.
The pictures are very well done, however, and it is at least worth a flip through to see the tribal variations. It can be helpful just as a starting point of further research.
Of course this is just my opinion. Compared to other books on the history of jewelry of any kind, I truly found this one lacking in content. Except for the descriptions under the pictures there are probably less than 10 pages of content.
I have rated this book "Average", but that is only because of the pictures. Without the wonderful pictures, I would have rated this book as "Poor".
