Build quality - solid. Fit and comfort - very nice. Customer support - responsive and professional. Sound quality - unfortunately, we couldn't really tell.

The main problem seemed to be the driver support on a Windows 7 PC. The microphone was recognized as a Turtle Beach device, but the headphones came up as a generic sound device. Adjusting the settings on either device through the control panels was hit and miss - sometimes we could play the test sounds, other times we would see an error message.

When using the headphones for gaming, only one of the channels would work for a given application. The sound may have been perfect, but the microphone would fail. Or, we'd just hear low quality microphone sounds. The diagnostic application suggested on the website did not run on the PC and the other suggestions from support did not resolve the issues.

End result - we returned the headphones.

The following review is based on a PC environment with a Creative Fatality Pro sound card, Logitech Z5500 speakers and basic audio controls.

First of all, this headset is very well made. The cups are nicely padded and the entire frame, although plastic, feels durable and it's actually very comfortable to wear. The cups caps can be exchanged with other cool designs that I've only seen at the Turtle Beach website. All in all, the headset looks and feels great.

The control pod is a mix of dials and mostly touch sensitive buttons for all the pre settings, etc. The main volume knob, when pressed down, will mute all sound and red ring will flash around it, press it once more and the ring will turn white, indicating you're off mute; the now white ring shows you the volume stages, a full ring means full sound, etc. It has 3 metal feet with rubber tips to keep from sliding off of your desk, etc. It also has a big metal clip under it, but I couldn't figure out what for, I can't really see it as a cloth clip, 'cause the pod is not light at all. Anyway, no complaints about the control pod/unit. It's very responsive to touch and it is well constructed.

The package contains:
1 headset of course, 1 Control Pod/Unit, 1 detachable microphone, 1 3.5mm/4 Pole Auxiliary Cable which you can plug to the control pod of the headset allowing you plug your phone and take calls while you play, 1 PC Speaker Adapter Cable, 1 Mobile Adapter Cable, 1 break-away Cable, which attaches the headset to the control pod, 1 instructions and pre-sets guide booklet and some TB stickers.

ONE IMPORTANT fact before I describe the CONS. This headset is basically THE SAME as the XP Seven, the XP Seven can basically be used with gaming consoles and PC.

Within 2 months the cheap plastic headband had started to break on one side and then within the next month this piece of crap had completely separated into 2 distinct pieces. Take my advice and do not buy this unless you are willing to severely overpay for a piece of trash product.

Oh it did sound great when it was in one piece but that doesn't mean anything if it becomes a piece of trash within months of buying it!

I wanted to write this as a warning to others and will give my honest and unbiased opinion.

Pros:
1. The mic is very clear (no static). Also it's detachable which is nice.

2. Comfort is 50/50ish. The ear cuffs fit nicely around the ears and not on them and the materials used are nice, however... (refer to Cons #5)

Cons:
1. The audio quality has been greatly over hyped and is quite poor in my opinion.

2. While idle (while no audio is playing) there is a faint static/humming sound.

3. Ear Guard™ Volume Limiter (very low volume). According to Turtle Beach this is to protect people (from themselves) from damaging their ears. The funny thing is at max volume all the decent presets have very low volume yet the last (and worst quality) preset #8 is EXTREMELY loud. So if you happen to be flipping threw the presets at max volume and hit #8 (like I did...) you will blast your eardrums defeating the purpose of Ear Guard™ Volume Limiter... A sick joke maybe?

4. Noise Gate. This is the worst feature of all (Which I originally thought was a fault with the headset) and cannot be turned off. What this does is mute all audio below a certain volume so the audio cuts in and out and sounds like stuttering and believe me it's very noticeable.
For example gentle or low BGM in games or movies will be silenced till someone talks or a loud sound occurs. Even talking can stutter and sometimes cuts off if too quiet or near the end of speaking. I even had audio cutting in and out between automatic gun fire if you can believe that.
Turtle Beach's solution (if it can be called a solution) is to turn the base volume on your devices up to the max setting (which doesn't help anyway).

5.

I like this headset. This is my 4th headset that could be easily defined as for gaming. I have a Triton 720, a Logitech G35, and another Turtle Beach; the XP510.

To me, all these headsets are exceptional. The sound is great considering it's from a headset. I do have a Polk surround sound system that cost 2-3K, but I can't really compare any headset to that.

This headset in particular is my second favorite, after my other Turtle Beach, but not by far.

This headset is wired, this is true. I did figure I have almost to many wireless devices in my house, so i figured I'd be ok with that, and I am. I also use these exclusively with my PC, and I sit right next to it. The wire in this case doesn't bother me.

It took me a little time to get it set up. The setup manual is garbage for the most part. It does poor job of explaining everything that needs to be. If you're not an expert with the technical side of audio/headsets, you MIGHT have a little trouble with the Z Seven headset.

After several internet searches I got my headset up and working. I was initially using the wrong playback under my audio device outputs. Yes, for some reason this headset lists two. I'm still at this point unsure the relevance of each. You'll have a SEVEN-CHAT, and a SEVEN-GAME.

You might say it's intuitive, but i beg to differ. The game output works just fine for chatting, and is the one you'll want to use if you plan on listening to any audio. The CHAT setting has NO BASS AT ALL. I thought my headset was broken. I figured it out, switched to GAME, and it sounds good.

I've only had this headset about a week, so I can't comment on durability, or endurance. If i do have trouble with it, I will absolutely edit that in.

Overall, if you want a pc headset, and don't mind fighting with all the technical stuff to get it working, the Z-Seven is a good choice for a wired headset. It feels alright on my head, and sounds good.
