4.0 out of 5 stars Good, melodic album - sadly overlooked, August 1, 2005
By
Mystery Biff (Quincy, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Turtle Soup (Audio CD)
Remembered, if at all, for the really minor alternative hit "Can You Dig It", the Mock Turtles' "Turtle Soup" is actually a very well-written, catchy pop-rock album that got lost in the Madchester shuffle. "Kathy Come Home", "Mary's Garden", and a mellow cover of "The Willow Song", from the cult film "The Wicker Man", are all memorable tunes that measure up to the band's lone semi-hit. There's nothing here you haven't heard before, and singer Martin Coogan's vocals are pleasing if rather nondistinct, but "Turtle Soup" remains a lost album of sorts that deserves a better fate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Haunting Subject Matter for Pop Songs, Low-FI Recording Adds to the Effect, November 2, 2011
This review is from: Turtle Soup (Audio CD)
Something, many things about this album stay with you, and cause many repeat listenings as you start to internalize the characters in the songs and relate to the nostalgic feelings created by a songwriter who relies mostly on the past tense.

If Collective Soul were a musical genre rather than the name of a band, The Mock Turtles would have dominated the C. Soul charts rather than falling into relative musical oblivion where they don't belong.

5 stars despite the fact that the cd is of cheap construction, and maybe better sound quality would have enhanced the end product even though the low-fi does match their style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tasty Dish, June 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Turtle Soup (Audio CD)
A tasty dish of interesting and lively Euro-pop that deserved more attention than it received.
The album features a nice blend of vocal harmonies against a backdrop of 'wall of sound" guitars that don't overpower the vocals.
Lyrics are well written with no profanity. Top tracs are " Can You Dig It ?" and " And When She Smiles ".
Since the album was released some time ago, the sound quality is not quite up to modern standards. The audio sounds a bit muted and would benefit greatly from remastering to current standards.
Similar artists would be the Style Council, Fleetwood Mac, Charlatins UK, and Crosby Stills and Nash.

Since the group only released a couple of albums, I would really like to see a remastered set of their complete works.
I recommend this album - give it a listen if you can get a copy of it.
