Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A simple popular rhyme about that childhood culinary favorite, peanut butter and jelly, becomes rich fare indeed in this buoyant picture book. Chantlike verses set forth the making of a sandwich from start to finisha process that is imaginatively extended through Westcott's talent for the comically outsized and absurd. Her chefstwo hungry children, an energetic dog and cat, five exuberant elephants and one jolly adultconstruct a sandwich like no other. Their bread is so enormous that a saw is required to slice it; their jelly comes from a bathtubful of grapes stamped and squashed to the desired consistency by elephants. This fully satisfying treat is completed with one page of clapping patterns, as well as hand and foot motions to accompany the rhymes. Ages 2-5.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 A peanut butter and jelly sandwich a la Westcott. With the help of elephants and a baker, two children create a table-size sandwich from scratch. First, the bread is kneaded, baked, and sliced. Then from beneath the kitchen table emerge five elephants, each armed with a bag of peanuts that they stomp into peanut butter. Next, on to the bathtub filled with grapes which are squashed into jelly. The result of this festive cooperative endeavor is a giant ``p & j'' sandwich consumed by all. The rhythmic text is a traditional song; it is made all the more delightful with Westcott's watercolor illustrations in pastels and muted tints. They fill double-page spreads but are not cluttered. Each scene prompts giggles and is enhanced by the sideline actions of a pet cat who looks shocked by the entire escapade, a dog who licks his chops in anticipation of snatching a morsel, and finally, the mother who faints in the kitchen doorway after witnessing the crowd. The book's large, humorous, colorful spreads make it conducive for group sharing. Instructions for the accompanying hand and foot motions are appended. A real treasure with potential use in any library's programming, especially storytimes. Mary Beth Burgoyne, Mesa Public Library, Ariz.

I had to buy this book because my five year old daughter keeps checking it out of the library. When I told her she had to check out another book this week she said, "Why, Mom? This is a GREAT book!" That is definitely one to have on our shelf. The pictures are delightful and the repetitive phrasing makes it easy to read yet there are some tough words which she has mastered because she knows the phrasing. I wish every book I purchased would pay off so well. She also said, "Mom, if you look at the pictures you just have to giggle."

My 2 1/2 year old daughter LOVES this book. Every night before we go to bed, she asks to read "Peanut butter, Peanut butter". She's already learned the rhymes, I say a part, and she knows when she needs to chime in! I also love Nadine Bernard Westcott's illustrations -- I've begun to search for and buy all of her books! Truly enjoyable for both the child and the adult!!

This story is cute - My daugher at age 4 at the time was in preschool and daily and I mean daily the boys would get this book prior to the girls getting it so it was a game every day to see who could obtain this book first...they never fought over any book but this one and the library had lots of books to choose from....anyways the girls and boys were fighting and pulling on the book one day that the book got ripped and the teachers had - really had enough of that book at that point and threw it away to teach the children a hard lesson in life.....meanwhile I had no idea as to what the teachers had done except for the fact that my daughter and her best friend came home crying that the book with the elephant and the peanuts got thrown out and why? the full explanation was there by them and they were devastasted..thinking that my child ripped a book so badly I immediatly went to Amazon and ordered it and sent it in with the two girls one day - the teachers look on their faces were priceless....every year both preschool classes always fought over the book and they were happy to finally get rid of a book that was always fought over ....and here we were bringing a new copy back....it was priceless an another year childrens will still be able to fight over it...tee-hee....I bought one for home and my daughters best friend....so now it is not a big deal if the boys get it right? We have our own copy....must have book really cute and the graphics are adorable.

How can this seller claim that this is an actual "Book"? I could print this off of my printer and staple it together and have better quality! Don't waste your money! My granddaughter was very upset. She thought she was actually getting a book....not a flimsy pamphlet like a church bulletin! What a joke! They should be ashamed to sell this!

I had this book for my grandchildren, who just loved it. Now I have two wonderful little girls living next door so I ordered it for them. They are just as enthralled with it as my granddaughter was. They go around singing "Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter, Jelly Jelly." I'm so glad it was still available.

Great book for preschooler and kindergarten. It is written about their favorite sandwich. It is fun to read and the pictures are hilarious. The kids can sing along while turning the pages.

Yep ....I was so happy to find this book ...:) It was one my son loved as a young child ....We would check it out at the library and take it back and he would want to check it out again ....The library would only let us do this a couple times then we would have to let other kids check it out .....but then ....the search was on to recheck it out when a month or two would pass ...I had looked to buy this book but was unable to find it a long time ago.....So when I saw this book I bought it ....my son is 22 now .....but thought I'd save it as a surprise for when he has kids ....:) Sure to be a hit.!!!!

My daughter absolutely loves this book! To the point of exhaustion she will have me read this book and do the actions with it over, and over, and over...

Originally we borrowed it from the library, but we just had to go ahead and purchase it after we had renewed it for the 3rd time and she threw a fit when we returned it. Well worth the money for the use we have gotten out of it.
