Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-3. For new readers ready for meatier fare, this taut story of a true blue dog will work well. J.D., the story's narrator, introduces her dog, Blue, who has "some sharp nose" and can smell trouble a mile away. When Blue disappears, J.D. searches for him, worrying that he has been shot by poachers. A dog has been shot, but it's not Blue, it's Molasses, a friend's dog. Blue, who has stayed with Molasses through the night, leads J.D. to him, and she gets the injured dog to a vet just in time. So many easy-to-reads are set in either suburbia or the city. This book's rural setting has a freshness that will appeal to many children who'll see their lifestyle reflected in J.D.'s. Ilene Cooper --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This book is too violent for young children or beginning readers. Just a few examples -- A girl's family is threatened by poachers, her dog is lost, another dog is shot -- Pass.

"True Blue" is a wonderful book for children and parents alike. Readers of all ages will get caught up in the story and run the emotional gamut with J.D., her dog, Blue, and Blue's best canine buddy, Molasses. The book leaves readers satisfied, yet wanting more stories about J.D. and Blue. Highly reccommended!

This is an unlifting story of a dog's devotion and intelligence. Great for young readers and excellently illustrated. I'm buying extra copies for my nieces and nephews.

I was horrified when my son and I started reading this book last night. The synopsis on the back is nothing like the inside. In short, a girl goes in the woods by herself, unbeknownst to her parents to find her missing dog. A second dog is shot by poachers and almost bleeds to death. Seriously?! This was marketed for 7 to 9 year olds. I can't believe I have to read the inside of a book for 7 to 9 year olds to keep them safe...Called the publisher and bookstore where I ordered it, no response. Not sure who could have ever authorized this at Penguin Books...

This is a good book for kids who like dogs and who want to read longer books. I read this book to my little brother and our dog and we all loved it! We have a dog just like Blue. His name is Spofford. If you like dogs and books, you'll love True Blue!!
