Turtles in Time was the second Ninja Turtles arcade game released, but the fourth in a line of Ninja Turtles games released to home consoles, and the first Ninja Turtles game for the Super Nintendo. You play as one of the four turtles, and must fight through ten stages to get the Statue of Liberty back from Shredder and his goons. Halfway through the game, you'll be sent into a time warp that has you battling on trains, in the age of the dinosaurs, and the future.

Konami was on a roll when it released these arcade games in the early 90s, and Turtles in Time is the company at its best. Graphics are bright and colorful, with lots of animation and traps in the levels. Enemies are mostly Foot Soldier robots, but they come in multiple colors and carry varying weapons, to good effect. Each Turtle is different in terms of strength and speed, and each has a different special attack. There are also special moves including being able to toss enemies at the screen, and the controls are responsive. The music is also very catchy, and fits each stage very well.

Konami also went the extra mile with the SNES version. Instead of being a straight arcade port, they tossed in new levels and mixed up the bosses a bit. The additions make for an overall better game, and are welcomed.

Turtles in Time can be unlocked on the TMNT3: Mutant Nightmare game for Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox, but its the original arcade and not the SNES port. Although the game is rather short (you can literally beat it in half an hour), it packs a ton of replay value with friends, and if you own an SNES it's worth tracking a copy down.

One of the first and greatest Super Nintendo games. Just as fun today as it was way back in the day. Very fun to play with friends. Only reason I gave it 4 overall and not 5 was because it would have been cool to have some different features other than the classic side scrolling play maybe after you beat it. Just a thought.

TMNT IV: TURLES IN TIME) (often referred to by subtitle only) is one of the best snes games! it is a snes version of the arcade game. In this game you as the title implies go through various times to defeat the evil shredder! the fighting controls are awesome and the moves are great! Throwing enemies towards the screen never gets old! This game is highly addicting and fun! Like many games for the Snes it can still be enjoyed even after all these years! Still fun as it is today as it was back in the day THIS IS A SOLID ARCADE FIGHTER! it also has a two player option and in sigle player a second player can jump in! COWABUNGA DUDES!!! 10/10

4.0 out of 5 stars Konami does well with the excellent SNES arcade port, August 18, 2011

After Konami released 3 games based on the Turtles franchise for the NES (2 under their subsidiary company, Ultra Games and the last one by themselves directly), they were ready to move onto the Super NES. In 1992, they released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, which was based on their mega hit arcade game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. For anyone who played the arcade version, it was a great game to play and the SNES version is almost as good. That's because Konami made some changes to the game before it was released. Nevertheless, Konami does well with the excellent SNES port.

You pick one of 4 turtles and go through 10 stages beating up foot soldiers, robots and boss characters. The goal is to reach Shredder and beat him to finish the game. You can go it alone or have another player join you. The entire game is based on the arcade version but Konami threw in extra game modes to lengthen the experience: 2 player VS mode where you and another player battle it out to see who's the best & the time trial mode where your goal is to beat up the enemies in cornered off sections of stages in the fastest time possible.

The PROS: This is a near perfect arcade port and the only thing that beats out the SNES version is the actual arcade game. It's fun and looks, plays & sounds great. It's even better when a friend joins you. Konami knew the game itself doesn't last too long so the extra game modes are a nice bonus to have since it adds some replay value in the end.

The CONS: The fact that the SNES only had 2 controller ports meant it was pointless to bring over the 4 player support from the arcade version. And then there were the changes to the game:

the intro from the SNES port was different from the arcade game, voice overs from the Turtles and bosses in the arcade game were cut from the SNES port, new enemies were added to the SNES port, Baxter Stockman's (1st level boss) attack patterns from the SNES port were different from the arcade game, the large group of Pizza Monsters waiting for you at the end of the 3rd stage from the arcade game were replaced by the Rat King for the SNES port, the 4th stage from the SNES port was exclusive, you could mount the dinosaurs in the 5th stage of the arcade game but they ran past you in the SNES port, the mud boss at the end of the prehistoric stage in the arcade game was replaced by Slash in the SNES port, Tokka and Rahzar were the boss characters at the end of the pirate ship atage and they were replaced by Rocksteady and Bebop in the SNES port (they were the mid stage bosses in the exclusive SNES stage), the Neon Nightriders stage in the SNES port moved in the background from top to bottom instead of left to right in the arcade game and the ending from the SNES port was longer than the one in the arcade game.

If you had an SNES, you bought and played this game to death. Konami hit it out of the park with this arcade port and this is a game that belongs in your SNES game library. Buy it anyway you can if you don't own it. I highly recommend it.

What can I say about this game that doesn't rock? it is by far my favorite beat um fighter game of all time. I have played this game probably about 100 times all the way through. this whole game is a masterpiece and Konami had a happen of making us proud to be gamers back in the SNES era. If you haven't played this game or do not own it already pick it now. don't download the new version xbox 360 or sony ps3 as they changed the graphics and removed some of the levels! get the Arcade Machine(if you got a couple thousands laying around) or the cheap route pick up a used snes cartridge version for around 20 dollars it is well worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost as much fun as the first one, November 28, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Turtles IV Turtles In Time (Video Game)
It's too bad Konami never released an arcade-perfect version of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game on the SNES. Actually this one isn't a perfect translation either. The SNES version is missing some digitized voices, a little robot in the second level that punches you, and a sample of the Pizza Power song. Some other chages are also made: April blinks onto the screen and yells "Fight!" (written, of course) when you lollygag as opposed to Splinter running across the screen telling you to hurry up, you fight Slash instead of a mud man in the Prehistoric level, you fight Rocksteady and Bebop on the ship level instead of Toka and Razar (who you fight in the Technodrome), you use surfboards in the sewer instead of just walking on water, and you fight the Rat King instead of Leatherhead in the Sewer level. It's not all bad though. Some of the levels are longer, there are new levels entirely, and you can fight a friend in training mode. A playable April would have been nice, but at least she doesn't get kidnapped again.
Anywho, although the title may be (sic) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, that's only because there were three TMNT games previously released on the original Nintendo Entertainment System (not counting Tournament Fighters). This is actually the second game released in the arcades.
Now for the actual review. The game takes you through, uh, I dunno, 15-or-so levels of repetitive non-stop action (double entendre? you decide). As usual, you get to choose between Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael (sorry, Venus, you weren't here yet). The subtitle, Turtles in Time, comes into play when you almost defeat Shredder and then are hurled back through time to 100,000,000,000,000-or-so B.C., then forward to 15??, 18??, 20??, 2???, then back to 1993 where you fight Shredder for supposedly the last time. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Greatest Adventure, November 10, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Turtles IV Turtles In Time (Video Game)
When I recall all of the great arcade games that were ported to home consoles such as the Nintendo, the Super Nintendo, and the Sega Genesis, I always find a couple flaws. For example, Konami's port of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Nintendo Entertainment System was a noble attempt, and the game is still fun. However, it really does not compare well at all to the magnificence of the actual arcade game. Everything is brighter, bigger, has better animation and sound, and is just inifinitely more fun. You really just can't beat the awesomeness of the arcade.

Except in this case.

Turtles In Time is the only game that comes to mind when I try to envision a home console port of a game actually equaling the quality of the arcade version. In fact, when you sit down and play the game, you legitimately feel as though you are actually playing an arcade game. I can't think of any other game from this era of video games that can live up to that kind of reputation.

Once you've played it, you will see why. The graphics are incredible, for starters. All the character sprites are very colorful and look like their cartoon show likenesses. The animation is also great. Whenever you throw a foot soldier towards the screen you are treated to a very impressive animation of the foot soldier flying at the player. The Turtle's weapons all look good and the sound effects are most impressive indeed for a 16-bit game. All the enemies look as they should, and with some of the levels we get to see some very cool background animation, such as in the case of the level where you are on the moving train. We also see very visually exciting animations in the levels where you are constantly moving, such as Sewer Surfin' and my personal favorite Neon Night Rider.

The Ninja Turtles use their weapons quite well and creatively, plus two really cool throw moves are part of the fighting arsenal as well. Not only can the Ninja Turtles throw foot soldiers towards the screen (an animation the Sega Genesis could not support in The Hyperstone Heist), but the Turtles are also capable of slamming foot soldiers repeatedly. Each Turtle also has a special move that will cost energy when used. You can also run, slide, and do a handspring.

Pizza are the power-ups, which is par for a Ninja Turtles game, but there is now a new "invincibility pizza" which will cause your Turtle to go into a brief fighting frenzy and eliminate any foot soldier you come in contact with.

One of my favorite aspects of the game is the boss battles. The game was great about giving us a familiar and well-detailed cast of Ninja Turtles enemies to fight as bosses. You will battle against the mutated fly version of Baxter Stockman on a New York City construction site, the evil robot Ninja Turtle Metalhead on the street, The Rat King in his sewer boat of death, Tokkar and Rahzer in the Technodrome, Shredder in his Turtle killing machine, evil Ninja Turtle Slash in a prehistoric dinosaur world, LeatherHead on a wild west train, Krang on a futuristic super-highway for hoverboards, Krang again on a Technodrome space station, and then finally Super Shredder. This fantastic variety of bosses and levels makes for a really great game.

The level music and the voice soundsbites are great, and there is even a fun elemnt of quirkiness that is in keeping with the humor of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon show. Let's not forget that back in these days the Heroes In A Half Shell ruled the world. Besides the successful cartoon show, movies and video games there was tons of merchandising in the form of lunchboxes, school supplies, kids' clothing and action figures among other things. Fans of the series delighted in a game that was perfectly executed, and tons of kids would spend countless hours during summer break from school fighting the footclan with a friend. This is one of those games that even if you had beaten it several times, you could always pop it back in for a fun play and enjoy beating it all over again.

To me, this game is the pinnacle of side scroller beat em ups. There were many great game that were classified in this genre, and many of them are very memorable, but no game in the genre comes close to being as great as this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite SNES Games!!!, October 2, 2011

This review is from: Turtles IV Turtles In Time (Video Game)
This is one of my all-time favorite SNES games. I just now re-played it, and it's still a blast. You can play as either Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, or Raphael to defeat Shredder's army of ninjas. Once you reach the Technodrome, Shredder sends you into a time warp. You must fight your way thru the past, and the future in order to get back home. I highly recommend TURTLES IN TIME!!!
