Book Description

Worldlife Discovery Guides July 2003
This book provides an in-depth look at these prehistoric-looking reptiles that have survived for more than 210 million years and have endured two waves of mass extinction. Unfortunately sea turtles face a daily threat of extinction. Doug Perrine guides readers through the fascinating lifecycle of the sea turtle, beginning with its harrowing dash from the nest to the ocean as a vulnerable hatchling through the many years spent at sea during maturation, from sexual maturity and reproduction to migration. Perrine describes the evolution of the sea turtle, its anatomy, what conditions led to its endangerment, and the attempts to save it. Detailed descriptions of the green sea turtle, loggerhead turtle, hawksbill turtle, olive ridley turtle, kemp's ridley turtle, Australian flatback turtle, and the leatherback turtle are included. For those who want to learn where to watch sea turtles from the land or from the water, Perrine offers this information as well. Incredible photography depicts sea turtles in the underwater environments.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The arribada has started--the mass arrival of hundreds of Olive Ridley sea turtle females, coming to shore to dig nests and lay their eggs--and we are in the surf witnessing their labors. Perrine, marine photographer and writer, takes the reader to the nesting beach to witness this reproductive ritual that has occurred for millions of years. It is this immediacy in writing style that makes a reader care about these turtles, which have existed on this planet since before the dinosaurs. In separate chapters, the author explores the evolution of sea turtles and looks at anatomy. The migratory patterns adult sea turtles follow and the (mostly negative) effects humans have on these animals are examined, and a long chapter discusses each of the seven species of sea turtle. Finally, how and where to watch sea turtles is discussed, with tips on observing the animals without disturbing them. Heavily illustrated with the author's beautiful photographs, this introduction to sea turtles will be a welcome addition to all libraries. Nancy Bent
