Book Description

August 16, 2004
Belinda Smith moved to Tuscany five years ago after finding her husband in bed with another woman. In the months following, Belinda's destiny became clear to her. She would leave behind the dull dormitory town of Tilling, where nothing ever happened. And seek out new and more exciting pastures in the Italian countryside. She would start life again. On her own. She would run a B&B and keep a diary. She would jot down her thoughts, share her ideas and pass on her delicious recipes to the next generation. Battlelines are drawn when rival Lauren, a feisty American, comes to Tuscany with the same idea. And when Lauren's son falls in love with Belinda's daughter, war is well and truly declared.

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNNY! - More than an ounce of pretension, July 20, 2010

This review is from: Tuscany for Beginners (Paperback)
Belinda, the very self serving central character in this wonderful, humorous tale is someone we all know. She bends the truth to portray herself as blameless and superior to all. Italy is where Belinda ran after discovering her husband and her next door neighbor in flagrante delicto. Her British expatriot friends, are accepting and tolerant of her for the most part, and life as the owner of a Tuscan bed and breakfast, purchased with her divorce windfall, works for her. She actually does very little work and orders, in very poor Italiano, her lovely daughter Mary (Maria) to do most everything. Belinda, of course, takes all the credit, all the while belittling Mary. When an American arrives to open a competing hotel, the real high jinx begin. A delightful read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funnier than "Under the Tuscan Sun", August 14, 2005

I have lately been drawn to books about Tuscany, heck it's the closest I'll ever get to going there and this book did not let me down. Yes, it has the occasional rustic recipe but the characters are what brings this book to life. I am sure everyone has a "Belinda" in their family and what she does left me laughing out loud at times and at other times feeling very sorry for her. I so thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
