Warren's book might thankfully be read as history. Describing a segregated US Army Air Corps in the waning months of World War 2. The book revolves around a "mutiny" and subsequent courts martial of three Negro airmen. It shows the conditions under which loyal American Negroes had to endure, while attempting to fly for their country.

The travails can make difficult reading. The segregation mindset was so prevalent then that to protest against it must have well seemed futile. Except to those court martialled and their supporters.

One promising aspect of the narrative is how the incident forced the Army High Command to directly confront issues that it no doubt wished to ignore. In some small way, the tribulations here helped pave the path for a future integrated armed forces.
