Book Description

August 5, 2005 0867095873 978-0867095876 2

The first edition of A Tutor's Guide helped tutors across the country connect composition theory to the everyday events in their tutoring sessions. This second edition moves further into the practical realities of today's writing centers, taking a closer look at the most important issues facing writing tutors and the students who confer with them.

Like its predecessor, A Tutor's Guide, second edition, provides access to the professional conversation that surrounds writing-center practices, offering a concrete sense of what tutoring sessions are really like, who uses them, and how to maximize their effectiveness. Now, new chapters take the interactions outlined in the first edition into conferences with:

  • English language learners
  • business and technical writers
  • advanced composition students
  • graduate-level writers.

The second edition also includes a new chapter that helps tutors understand what happens when a session goes awry and gives them fresh tools for reflection that will strengthen their ability to respond to unusual situations in the future.

With a keen awareness of both the nuts and bolts and the important theoretical and pedagogical underpinnings of good tutoring, A Tutor's Guide is an invaluable tool for every writing center.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Well-informed by contemporary theory, the essays in this collection touch on important but often neglected aspects of writing-center tutoring, from dealing with emotionally charged topics, to engaging diffident writers, to working with students on thorny grammatical and stylistic problems.”–Russell K. Durst, University of Cincinnati

“A Tutors Guide offers clear, sensible, and cautionary advice to all tutors and teachers of writing.”–Toby Fulwiler

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Practical Advice, May 11, 2000
By
Leslie Van Wagner (Nashua, New Hampshire USA) - See all my reviews
This collection of essays provides incredibly helpful advice on ways to handle conferencing situations that come up every day in a Writing Center. Even though the essays reflect current research, they offer practical and straight-forward advice. I'm ordering a copy for all the consultants at my Writing Center!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Approachable, and Informative!, December 15, 2010

This review is from: A Tutor's Guide: Helping Writers One to One, Second Edition (Paperback)
I enjoyed many of the essays in this collection. I will be teaching a consultant-training class for the first time next semester, and will certainly be sharing many of these essays with them. I like that it contains more updated information and ideas; even though the fallback essays from Stephen North and Muriel Harris are certainly necessary in a consultant-training course, essays like the ones in this collection also hold their place in Writing Center theory and practice.
