Tuttle Concise Indonesian Dictionary: Indonesian-English English-Indonesian

This is billed as a revision of the early-1990s Kramer and Koen paperback, but it's really like a whole new dictionary. It fills a lot of inexplicable holes in the older book. The definitions are for the most part clear and intuitive. And the biggest thing for travelers and beginning students is that Indonesian words are listed as they appear--you don't have to deduce a root word, which the older edition and other Indonesian dictionaries make you do (fine if you've learned a bit of the language, but it makes a dictionary pretty much useless if not). The compiler is Australian, but as an American I have not run into any usage issues. Hard to see from the picture, but the book also includes an English-Indonesian dictionary and should also be useful for Indonesian speakers learning English.

There seems to be a few small concise combined phrase books and dictionaries floating around on bookshop shelves these days. The dictionaries are usually very limited in these books due to size constraints.

This one however is a pure dictionary which is surprisingly comprehensive although very compact. I use this to learn the Indonesian language and it is useful to have both Indonesian to English and English to Indonesian translations. The print is quite small which could be hard to read depending on your eyesight but the words are written in blue followed by a definition in black which makes them stand out and be more easily found. Pronounciations are not included however, so if you're learning the language its probably best to do so with the help of additional aids used in conjunction with this book.

However, I find this book indispensible for finding meanings of words that are not used in common vocabulary. A good book overall and I can recommend it for people studying the language.

It is NOT nearly exhaustive as I had hoped! In communication with Indonesians, many words commonly used are not in Tuttle CONCISE Indonesian Dictionary --emphasis is on the "Concise" not the 20,000 words contained in it! . . . .But it a vast improvement over the dictionaries in phrasebooks, etc.

This a very helpful compact dictionary. Fits well in my purse or my computer case. A little bit big for a pocket if you wanted to carry it around when traveling. You will need some type of bag to put your dictionary in. I am just starting to study Indonesian, so I can talk to my cousins I found on Facebook. This dictionary has come in handy. Easy to read and has a little history about the language and other references like colors, time , numbers, letters and vowel sounds. It starts from Indonesian - English then English -Indonesian. Oh yes, the type face is not too small so it is easy on the eyes.

This is small enough to keep handy and the waterproof cover makes it easy to flip open to use quickly. It does not assume the user can figure out the word root, but does provide that information. The scope is more than adequate for a beginner/intermediate learner.

Excellent dictionary because it gives meanings of words with prefixes and suffixes. You don't have to try to figure out what the root word is first, as most other dictionaries. Excellent for someone just learning the language.

This dictionary would serve the beginner well, but using it to read short stories written by Indonesian writers like Pramoedya Ananta Toer, I found that it was simply insufficient. I like the sturdiness of the binding and the quality of the print. Also, a sterling effort was made to ensure that the definitions were crisp and to the point. But the lack of a decent vocabulary means that you cannot rely wholly on it. To improve the dictionary's functionality, I would recommend expanding the number of entries in future editions.

Great small dictionary that would be easy to keep with you when travelling or studying. Very good lay out and colored for easy reference.

This is a vast improvement over the old Tuttle Indonesian dictionary. An attempt was made to define specific versions of an Indonesian word rather than have the user wade through a long list of variants. The printed page is much more attractive and the binding much better (for the past 2 years, the old Tuttle has been in pieces fluttering around my room). This is a must buy for Indonesian word users due to the inexpensive price and careful and exciting revision. And please -- throw away your exhaustively worn previous Tuttle paperbacks before they totally rot!!
