This review is from: Mark Twain's America [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have used this film--and now the much more convenient VHS-- in my classes on American literatue and culture class for years. It's a wonderful introduction to Twain and to American culture at the turn of the 20th century. The film is based on Bernard deVoto's classic study of the same title. The emphasis is on Twain's AMERICA. It is a comprehensive survey of American culture, how Twain illuminated that culture and how he himself was influenced by it. It is not a "talking head" production but a pastiche of images--still photos, film clips, etc--from late nineteenth century and early twentieth century America, including some footage of Twain himself. Some viewers may find it dated, but very time I view it, I'm fascinated once again.

This review is from: Project Twenty: Mark Twain's America (DVD)
This is a quick overview of Mark Twain's life. There is very little about the Guilded Age in it. I had hoped there would be more substantive history in there, or more of his humor.
