Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-K-An 18th-century Papa narrates how he and the family pets assist Santa setting out Christmas presents for the family. Disney-like, full-color digital artwork lavishly depicts Moore's Christmas scenario from the kids snuggled in their beds to clever details such as Santa's reflection on each Christmas bulb. The book is subtle in its environmental and health-oriented treatment of the classic poem, except for Santa's note on the back flap saying that he has stopped smoking to be healthier and has always worn fake fur to protect animals including the Arctic polar bears. 1.0 out of 5 stars Edited Classic November 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an edited version of an old favorite and is illustrated, by Elena Almazova and Vitaly Shvarov. The subtitle, which is difficult to read in the picture provided, says "edited by Santa Claus for the benefit of children of the 21st century". The illustrators took the liberty to edit out the lines about Santa's pipe so they would not be promoting smoking. The ironic thing--there's tons of candy included--what about obesity? There is a roaring fire in the fireplace and all the candles in the house are still lit long after the family is in bed--what about fire hazards? There are wine glasses in a china cabinet--what about alcohol abuse? And on top of this, mom has cleavage.

I know these are picky points and the pictures are cute with a Disney-esque style, but there are hundreds of versions of this wonderful, classic poem. Don't waste your purchase on this one. Even if it is free.

1.0 out of 5 stars Illustrations 5, Censorship -5 November 14, 2012
By 4Nbahu
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is for the version illustrated by Elena Almazova and Vitaly Shvarov

When I saw this book for free today I was so excited. When I saw the quality of Illustrations I squealed. This is one of my favorite Christmas Stories, and my High School Choir would sing it. Then I realized that it had been cut.

Stabbed by the censorship police. I do not proscribe to the thought that ideas that are no longer acceptable or are becoming unacceptable should be ripped from the bookshelves. If I did, I wouldn't own any Mark Twain, or some Agatha Christie. The authors of their times wrote with the ethos of their time, whether it has changed or not does not matter. They took their inspiration and put it to pen. We should respect that and their talent. A Santa Claus with a pipe will not cause millions of children to run out and take up the bowl.

So while I praise the artistry which I found amazing. In fact a couple of the pictures I thought I could just walk into. I cannot approve of censorship in any form.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Changes November 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has an extended title stating that it is "edited" by Santa for the 21 Century. I read the book first and did realize that there was a big difference. LINES WERE CUT OUT!

I am all about books, that's why I got a Kindle; however, I am not about change. The lines in question, to the true editors of this edition, may seem to put Santa in poor light. Come on people this poem has been around for years, it was written in 1822; and besides Santa can never be seen in bad light, he's Santa!

While the illustrations for this book are nice, if not small on an e-reader screen, I simply cannot read it so incomplete. I would recommend an older version or search for the original; which is in the Kindle bookstore for free as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Changed story to be "PC" November 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Clement Moore wrote "Twas the Night Before Christmas" for his daughter. I grew up reading it, as did my children and now my grandchildren. Santa had a pipe in his teeth and a ring of smoke that circled his head like a wreath (paraphrased). None of us were harmed by the story - and amazingly enough none of us smoke. Smoking is a legal activity.
To change a classic to push a political agenda is just selfish.
Two thumbs down.

1.0 out of 5 stars From a distant relative- do not buy this book! October 16, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I am disgusted and angry that these people had the arrogance to change the author's poem. It might be legal, but it sure isn't moral. I hate smoking, but changing an author's work after he is long dead and cannot defend himself is wrong. This NOT my cousin's work. It is a politically correct assault by people who should know better. If you, like me, believe that an author's work should be left alone, there are plenty of books with the original work out there. Please buy one of these!

1.0 out of 5 stars non smoking version November 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I prefer the original.
Nice pictures.
Same plot but the original author would likely not be pleased.
Political correctness strikes again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Liberties taken...CENSORSHIP! November 18, 2012
By CC
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
NOT the poem-story from your childhood. Text from original deleted...CENSORED!

Was thrilled to see it offered as 'Free'... now I know why.

Its one thing to choose to teach your children lessons in accord with your personal belief system, but *tampering/censoring the text from a time-honoured, classic poem-story... and then to assign responsibility to "Santa" is simply irresponsible, and plain wrong.

Am deleting from my Kindle FireHD as soon as review completed.

*Comments state (see subtitle & end "pages"): "Edited by Santa for the benefit of children in the 21st century".... leave Santa out of it! He's not a Censorship-driven Editor.

VERY DISAPPOINTED!

1.0 out of 5 stars Cause Santa is the reason kids start smoking...... October 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover
So let me get this straight, for more than 100 years it was Santa that drove kids to smoke? Well thank you Pamela McColl. You are obviously much smarter than the rest of us. Thank you for taking it upon yourself to change a harmless childhood classic. I will be sure to buy the original story, not some literary drivel that tries to change the story to fit your misguided mindset that you know better.
