One of the very great Shakespeare adaptations., June 28, 2001
This review is from: Twelfth Night (Shakespeare: The Animated Tales) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Quite simply one of the best ever Shakspearean adaptations, because it achieves the near-impossible balance of comedy and melancholy that makes 'Twelfth Night' THE Shakespeare play of choice for the discerning. More than either, the film makes tangible a feeling of longing: the exquisitely fine puppetry, the richly detailed mise-en-scene, the haunting Elizabethan pastiche score, all frame characters alone and desiring, unrequited. This courtly anguish is satisfyingly countered by the cruel, physical humour of Toby and Aguecheek's world, but even here, Malvolio's mirroring humiliation returns us to sadness.

It's hard to believe that a half hour version of a Shakespeare play can be so good. What is even more incredible is that it appeals to every age. The scenery and the puppets are beautiful, and the actors voicing the roles totally convincing. (Look for Hugh Grant in a small role.) Check out all Shakespeare titles in the series - Midsummer Night's Dream is very different, but just as good.
