This guide was originally published in 1985 and has been a valuable resource as I have wandered around Northern Michigan. It's details are as factual today as when first written. The details of every launch and entrance to each river is remarkable. I've fished many of the spots and have found the descriptives to be right on. I just wish I was a better fly fisherman. I keep this book with me and even make notes in it. I highly recommend this for any experience level.

If you go trout fishing in Michigan, this is the book you want to read. There's a lot of history included and the information provided about access points, river bottom, water depths, and current are invaluable. I carry this book with me when I go fishing in Michigan. This is a re-write of an earlier version of the book and the re-write is very well done.

Absolutely unique! Nothing else comes close to the coverage and expertise of the writer who was state hydrologist for the USGS.

Just started flyfishing in Michigan and bought this book on a trip to Mackinac Island. I was hoping that it would be a comprehensive guide to trout fishing in Michigan, but it is not. It DOES deliver what it promises in the title, but, again, I was hoping for a more pragmatic guide.

That said, I am very pleased with the content of the book, as far as it goes. It covers only the twelve blue ribbon trout streams of the lower peninsula, which are the "holy waters" for most trout fishermen here in Michigan. Don't get me wrong, as a very specific guide to these rivers, this book is the most comprehensive I have seen. I recently spent a day on the Ausable and this book gave me the confidence to go there totally new to the area, and find what I needed to have some fun fly fishing on the true "Holy Waters" section of this river.

For those of you who, like me, were looking for a more comprehensive guide to flyfishing in Michigan, there are other books that discuss the many other rivers in the state that have trout and steelhead in them. This book does not even hint at such great fishing as the Muskegon, White, or Grand Rivers, for example; river systems that border the twelve mentioned in this book, but are not even mentioned in passing. One of the best rivers in the state for salmon, steelhead, lake run browns, and so on, is not mentioned either (the St.Marys River in Sault Ste Marie!).

Ok, I get that this book's focus is narrower...but come on! Not even a mention?
