Thanks to Griffin's (The Fabrics of Fairy Tale) luxuriously appliqud and embroidered collages and handmade-paper constructions, the 12 days of Christmas here add up to a visual feast. Sequins, beads, buttons, richly dyed fabrics and more embellish these spreads in celebration of the traditional carol about true love and creative gift-giving. A CD recording of the song performed by British vocalist Caroline Butler. All ages.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-This offbeat version of the popular song has limited child appeal. Against backgrounds of turquoise, magenta, and purple fabrics, the familiar lyrics are printed alongside highly embellished appliqud and needlework illustrations. Eastern motifs or themes are incorporated, such as "ten pipers piping" pictured as turbaned snake charmers and "five gold rings" on the trunk and legs of an elephant. Collections containing versions by Dorothee Duntze (North-South, 1992; o.p.) or Vladimir Vagin (HarperCollins, 1999), both identically titled, can skip this offering.-S. P.
