Book Description

April 1995
For 12 days in May 1940 the Hurricane squadrons of the Royal Air Force faced the might of the German Air Force and carved a glorious chapter in the annals of aerial warfare. Using contemporary accounts, official records and personal interviews, from both sides, the authors have produced a detailed day-by-day study of the efforts of the outnumbered RAF fighters during the decisive initial stage of the Battle of France.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cull's usual high-quality research yields a surprise!, August 4, 2003

This review is from: Twelve Days in May (Paperback)
I've read a number of works by Brian Cull, usually co-authored by Christopher Shores. I've come to expect books that exhibit good writing, rare photos, and meticulous research--research that often challenges popular conceptions of certain events.

"Twelve Days in May," co-authored by Bruce Lander and Heinrich Weiss, is an excellent micro-history of the air battles over the Low Countries at the beginning of the Blitzkrieg in the West.

The big surprise for me: the effectiveness of the Bf-110 versus the Hurricane. Careful checking of the records seems to indicate that the much-maligned twin engined fighter held its own against the British Hurricane, and it helps me understand the success of the Bf-110 in Greece, North Africa, and Russia.

Serious students of air campaigns in WWII should have this book (and all of those co-authored by Shores, Cull, Malizia, Ring, Izawa, and Hess) on their shelves.

An added bonus: "Twelve Days in May" is cheap!

This review is from: Twelve Days in May (Paperback)
Thirty days hath September, April, June and November;
February has twenty-eight alone, All the rest have thirty-one,
Excepting Leap-year, that's the time
When February's days are twenty-nine.

When will these so called "authors" learn?
