This review is from: Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus [Vinyl LP] [Stereo] (Vinyl)
When I was a kid and my family went on trips, we would decide what music to listen to and this was the only tape that every one of us liked.
I think of this album as trippy, kind of fun. It has a lot of comical elements with falsetto singing, horns, and lyrics. Lately I've been digging the xylophone and bass combination of "Love Has Found A Way" and the campiness of "Mr Skin". It also has some beautiful songs like "Nature's Way" (maybe their biggest hit) and "Lonely Soldier" and some psychadelic songs like "Space Child" and "When I touch You". They put in a lot of sound effects, even the backward-playing loops, and I believe they were described as ahead of their time. They have the 3 part harmonies like people used to have in the 60s; that seems to be a dying art anymore. There really aren't any bad songs on the album, and most of them are very catchy.
Spirit didn't achieve the massive fame of some of their contemporaries because of a few bad breaks (including being trashed by some moron at Rolling Stone, I believe) but they are every bit as talented as musicians and songwriters and have had a long career. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes classic rock, but has already listened to everything else people think of as classic rock and want to hear something "new".
