5.0 out of 5 stars OZARKS are not Appalachia, August 29, 2004
This review is from: Twelve Fair Kingdoms (Paperback)
I have held this book as all the others by Ms. Elgin in very high regard, because she captures the truth of the matter without changing who she is.
This is a book about Ozark culture, not Appalachian. There are miles and mounds of difference.
But beside that issue, it is a very well constructed series and a very timely discussion, especially for those of us interested in truth over bulls**t in the upcoming elections.
I highly recommend this and would for anyone that wants to learn about the mind of Ms. Elgin and how Ozarkian would work in a place like she develops here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Appalachia as a world..., July 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Twelve Fair Kingdoms (Hardcover)
Imagine Appalachian culture as the only one that humans have, on a world that isn't Earth. Imagine a 13-year-old as the organizer of a pact renewal, and doing a good job at it -- of course her name is Responsible. What else would it be? Add in an adventurous Quest, and there you have 'Twelve Fair Kingdoms' in a nutshell. It's better than that, but I can't tell more. It might ruin it for you. Despite a few confusing points, this book is overall very good. I've never read anything like it. Suitable for anyone mature enough to handle most Young Adult books, I'd say. Or anyone cognizant of all that Appalachia entails, if you set it about the time of Catherine Marshall's 'Christy'.
