How could I resist this book, when "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is one of my favorite Christmas carols, and Fiona Goble is my favorite designer of knitted toys? Usually I buy Fiona's books and simply enjoy looking at the pictures, but this is one set of toys that I fully intend to knit! I really like the designer's amusing "characters".

The cover photo shows you what you'll get: patterns for a partridge, a turtledove, a French hen, a calling bird, five gold rings, a goose, a swan, a milkmaid, a lady, a lord, a piper, and a drummer. Sadly, there's no pattern for a knitted pear tree--but there is a nice cardboard pear tree (attached to the back cover) that you can cut out and assemble to form the centerpiece of your Christmas display. The pear tree is highly stylized in its design, with leaves suggested by pointy ovals and pears formed of circles with X's in the middle.

The patterns are written for DK yarn (12 stitches and 16 rows to a 1-1/2" (4 cm) square--not your usual 4" square). The knitting is done on 2.25 mm (US 1) and 3 mm (US 2/3) needles. However, as the designer says, "For these projects, [gauge] is not as important as it is when you're knitting garments. But it is important that your knitted pieces are quite dense, otherwise you may find that the stuffing shows through . . . ." Directions for finishing include small amounts of sewing, embroidering, and chain stitching (crochet). The finished projects are stuffed with polyester fiberfill.

The patterns have row-by-row instructions (no charts). Because these are relatively small projects, they shouldn't require a lot of knitting experience. However, there are a lot of pieces to knit and assemble for the human figures, and there is a lot of detail work required for the finishing. This set will definitely take some time to complete.

The only problem with this book is that it didn't come out in time for me to make a set for my goddaughter for Christmas (I'm a slow knitter). On the other hand, I've got *two* gifts all figured out for 2013!

I bought this book so I could make my own Christmas tree ornaments. The patterns are very well written and easy to understand. The results are wonderful. Thanks to Fiona Goble for some truly fun and delightful knits.

This is such a cute book. I don't know if I will ever make these items but I love looking at this book. It is a work of art. I think these would make great tree ornaments! Bring a smile to my face!

What an adorable little book this is, and I can't wait to get started on some of the projects. I think I have enough work in this one book to last a life time, it will takes lots of yarn scraps.

I chose this craft book partly for the author since I have several of her books. This would be a good project to use all those scraps of yarn. I'm already looking forward to next Christmas.

This pattern book makes each part of the Twelve Days of Christmas song.

The instructions are clear and most come with a picture to show you what they are talking about. I would say this would be easy for an intermediate knitter. The only crochet you would need is for a single chain stitch.

It's a great way to use your yarn up with these cute figures from the song.

I can't wait to try the seven swans a swimming!

I borrowed this book from my local library.

I collect 12 Days of Christmas items, so I bought this book. Enjoyable to look at the photos, but the actual knitting is beyond my skill level - so I will just look.
