Editorial Reviews

2010 two CD collection. For Twelve Nights In Hollywood, Verve Select dug into the vault to collect the best of her performances across her extended 10-night 1961 engagement at Los Angeles' Crescendo Club - which originally resulted in the hit LP Ella In Hollywood - and her two-night return engagement the following year, presenting an unforgettable experience that puts you right in the front seat at the club, without repeating any performances from the original album. It includes several tracks never before heard by Ella live, tracks she had just recorded or had yet to record in the studio, and old chestnuts she revisited in a fresh way.

Probably America's finest female vocalist in a warm relaxed setting.
Michael Palermo
This cd set is remastered from the original analog tapes that produced the 2-LP record album in May 1961.

This compact set of two discs, formerly a Barnes & Noble exclusive, fits into a single CD case. It constitutes the first two CDs in the complete "Twelve Nights in Hollywood" box set. Together with "Vol. 3 & 4," these two sets present all of the music in the box set but in a more compact form, and they include many of the heretofore unseen photos in the larger album. I picked up both sets at B&N for the promotional price of $18.99 each, saving considerably over the cost of the big box. They're now available at Amazon for even less; buy both sets and the shipping is free!

These cozy dates, never released until 2010, come from a Los Angeles club called the Crescendo. They were recorded in 1961 and 1962. While the performances could have been a hit originally, producer Norman Granz unfortunately gave them short shrift: a single poorly-selected and poorly-mastered LP that flopped commercially. The tapes sank into the vaults, not to be unearthed until jazz researcher Phil Schaap dug into the archives in 1988. He found 14 hours of California recordings made over 12 days, along with unheard live sets recorded in Rome and Chicago. Another 22 years passed before Richard Seidel, the producer of the boxed set, assembled four CDs from the Hollywood tapes. In all, the CDs contain 76 gems from the Great American Songbook, both swinging and sentimental. Ella is a joy throughout: creative and playful in her phrasing and scatting, by turns relaxed and spirited in her mood. All four volumes are essential acquisitions for Fitzgerald fans.

If you are an Ella fan then this will end up being one of your
favorite CD's and if you are not one yet you will be. She was just back in the US from a long tour and did a relaxed series of sets that I think are the best versions of many of her standards. You cant go wrong with this CD.

Hi,

Although I had several of the Concert albums from all over, this is the first that I had heard a recording of Ella is such a small venue. And it is really quite amazing--really makes me wish I could have been there. Great song choices, overall, and Ella was really in her prime vocally. Tommy Flanagan on piano was pretty amazing as well.

Like the Gershwin album with Ellis Larkin, there is an initmacy to these recordings not found on life recordings before bigger audiences. This was truly a great listen--and pretty amazing to think that this first came out almost 50 years after recording and still remians as vibrant, fresh and fun as the days it was recorded.

Highly recommended!

My mother has always been a huge Ella fan, as have I. But once she heard this recording, she proclaimed it's the best CD she's heard.

There is nothing like a live performance cd to make you feel like you are part of the audience especially when it comes to "The First Lady of Song." This is a 2-disc cd set with 19 selections on Disc 1 and 18 selections on Disc 2. These two cd's have all the great standard songs that made Ella a household name in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. This cd set is remastered from the original analog tapes that produced the 2-LP record album in May 1961. The recording is excellent for being remastered from analog tapes and it is on Norman Granz "Verve" label where Ella spent a good part of her singing career doing her finest work. If you want to hear Ella at her best doing a live performance, then this cd set is just for you. There are too numerous selections of standard songs to go into but to name a few special ones Ella swings with "Mr.Paganini; Too Close For Comfort; I've Got A Crush On You; A-Tisket,A-Tasket; Witchcraft; The Lady Is A Tramp; and Lullaby of Birdland." She swings, and she sings her heart out on all these selections and more. I personally guarantee that you will not be disappointed if you purchase this cd set. And you can play the cd's to your heart's content and not have to worry about scratches or distortions that eventually we encountered with the vinyl records of the 50's through 70's.

This is a must have for any Ella fan. The live recording is like a time travel back to California in the 60's. Ella has refreshing interpretations of many of the "standards". This is one of those cd's that will be getting a lot of repeated playtime.

This double CD of Ella's engagement at the Crescendo nightclub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood in 1962 should be in every jazz fan's collection. Ella is at the top oi her game and that means we hear some of the swingingest vocals ever recorded. Highly recommended!
