Folded flat, Compass is a mere 7-inches long by 1-inch wide, about the size of a candy bar. Small enough to carry and use everywhere you go. Set it up on a desk, coffee table, night stand, kitchen countertop and pretty much any flat, stable surface you’re likely to set your iPad on. Think of Compass as a portable easel to display your photography, a mobile movie theater or an instant work station that’s angled at a wrist-happy position for onscreen typing. Compass is solid, super sturdy and has soft silicone pads on the feet to protect any surface you set it on. It’s easy to see why MacWorld gave Compass 4.5 out of 5 Mice.

I was blown away by the look and feel of the design of the Compass Portable Stand and it functions just fine 90% of the time. However, the support arms that extend forward for the I-Pad to sit on do not have appropriate grip causing the pad to sometimes slip off with minor contact or attempts to adjust things like the volume or other touch screen items. As, well the kick stand is not quite long/tall enough for viewing video from what I would consider a comfortable angle; it leans the pad back a little to far. Finally, though I like it and it meets my purposes, for the cost alone, I would be unlikely to recommend it to others.

Nice little stand if the anodizing hadn't peeled of as I removed the protective(?) film. Ruined the impression of quality right there.

It's not a bad tablet stand, but I felt I had to ding it two stars for the price and the fact that it falls over too easily. If it where cheaper I might be able to overlook the stability issue, but at this price I expect more.

The problem is that the rubber feet will grab on to the table. If you push it around with something on it then one of the legs will collapse and your $500+ device will fall over with a thud. My iPad got it's first scratch thanks to this. There are much cheaper stands that don't have this problem.

On the other hand it looks nice and there's enough room to plug the sync cable in with an iPad. There's rubber pads in all the right places to keep it from scratching both your table and tablet, provided you keep it upright.

This took about four passes through the x-ray thingy and two sniffs by the chemical sniffer before they'd let me have it back ... apparently the aluminium is too dense ? Otherwise I use it every day, I just don't travel with it :(

The stand was originally purchased to hold my iPad as an easel during a photography show. The stand did great for this task and its appearance complimented the iPad giving a professional look to the setup. I've since used the stand extensively to hold the iPad while watching movies -- I've found that the portable compass stand holds the iPad at a more comfortable viewing angle than the folded iPad 2 cover does. The compass stand is flexible enough, too, that you don't need to remove the iPad 2 cover to use the compass stand. Additionally, the compass stand works very well in holding the iPad in a slightly elevated orientation for use when typing, though I would say that the folded iPad 2 cover does just as well in this case. Finally, the stand neatly folds up for storage in a nice, neoprene carrying sleeve.

The Twelve South Compass stand for the iPad is an outstanding product. It not only works with the iPad, but also other tablets larger than 8". It's ingeniously simple and durable. It is built like an engineer's tool. It's stylish. And it will never scratch or leave a mark on your device, thanks to rubberized mounting surfaces. I just have one complaint about the packaging. The compass comes in a paperboard retail package that is compact and not at all wasteful. But the compass itself has protective clear stickers all over it that leave a glue residue when peeled off. It's very annoying and took more than a few minutes to wash off and dry. I found the adhesive film to be unnecessary. A paper or foam wrap around the compass would have been fine. But the product is highly recommended to any owner of a 8" 9" or 10" tablet!

The stand is solid and has enough heft with the rubber feet it won't slide around while tapping the screen. My one complaint is the arms that hold the iPad from the base stick out too far, causing my hand to catch on them too often. They could seemingly be shortened significantly without impacting usability or stability at all.

The red color in the marketing photos showed a more muted, matte kind of finish. In reality, it's more glossy than I expected. Still love it, but keep that in mind.

I have been using one of these for two years now with my iPad. I recently got them for family members with Kindle fires. They love them as well.

Pros: Well built, high quality.
