Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I want to float my iPad next to my Mac?

HoverBar creates the ultimate Apple multi-computing workstation by floating iPad next to any iMac or Apple Display. While your Mac is running Mail, Pages or Keynote, your iPad can display a FaceTime chat, Twitter or your favorite live weather app.

Can I use HoverBar and my iPad to create a secondary monitor?

Absolutely. Our favorite dual-screen app at Twelve South is Air Display by Avatron Software. Two other options are iDisplay by SHAPE Services and Mirror Display by Phyar Studio.

I use my MacBook Pro with a non-Apple display. Is there a way I can still use HoverBar?

Sure. Rather than attaching HoverBar to the back of your monitor, you can simply attach it to the edge of your desk and float iPad near your monitor or over your MacBook.

Is there any benefit to owning a HoverBar if I only have an iPad?

You bet. HoverBar makes an excellent stand alone display for iPad. Attach HoverBar to a table and pair an external keyboard and mouse and now you have a micro workstation. Used upright, your iPad can be used for interacting with DJ, piano and other music apps.

How does HoverBar work in the kitchen?

HoverBar is a super convenient kitchen accessory. It lets you position your iPad at eye-level, so you can follow your favorite recipe apps or stream a cooking video while you prepare dinner. More importantly, your iPad hovers above the counter, away from a wet, messy counter and out of your workspace.
HoverBar is easy to connect to your kitchen cabinets. All you have to do is choose a location and tighten a clamp. No drills or screws go into your cabinets.

Can I use HoverBar with my first generation iPad?

Yes, an iPad clip made just for the first generation iPad is now available.

Will HoverBar work with my iPad Smart Cover?

HoverBar works with Apple's Smart Cover, but does not work with shells or cases that add bulk or material to the back of the iPad.

Is HoverBar hard to install?

No. To attach HoverBar to a Mac, table or cabinet, simply slide the clamp into position and tighten with the included allen wrench. To insert iPad into the secure clip, place the bottom corners of iPad into the frame, gently clip the top of the iPad into the frame to secure. Then you can position iPad wherever you want it. No drilling, no screws, no furniture damage and no commitment.

Will HoverBar leave marks on my Mac or furniture?

No, the heavy-duty metal clamp has thick silicone cushioning to make sure your Mac and furniture are safe from scratches.

Is the HoverBar arm omnidirectional, or does it have limited movement?

HoverBar has a strong arm that flexes in all directions. A ball tip holds the iPad clip, allowing you to swivel and tilt it, giving you additional viewing angles and options.

It's very sturdy and made from what seems like high quality material.

After I clamped the hover bar to my iMac, the weight of my iPad would unscrew the arm from the clamp leaving me with a constant wobble.

I'll keep playing with it.... but I'm thinking that it's probably going to just get returned.

This is a great mount, and like all of the Twelve South products the quality of this construction is un-matched... it holds my ipad2 right where I want it, allows me to press the screen as needed, and even rotates easily for portrait or landscape modes... But!!

I have the 3G iPad2 and after using the hoverbar for about 3 weeks, I have noticed that when I remove my iPad from the mount, and clip it into the mount... the mooting clips leading edge has been chipping away at the black plastic that covers the Antenna on the 3G model....

i recommend that you ensure you pull the clip clear of the iPad before removing or inserting it into the mount.... to clarify I love the product, just noticed this fluke of a design...

Overall, I would say its a good product. I have a carbon fiber clamp arm for my iPad 2, but I when I saw this it seemed like it would be a better solution for suspending my iPad off the desk. It's very sturdy and made from what seems like high quality material. The one drawback I noticed while mounting to the back of my 27" Thunderbolt Display was that, when mounted on the left viewing side (the screen's right) the arm that screws into the base would loosen at the base since the pressure from holding the iPad's weight was enough to essentially unscrew the arm from the base. In the end, I just mounted it on the other side. Problem solved. That, and the fact that it is a little difficult to adjust since the arm has so much resistance docked it a star.

Unlike many iPad accessories, ones that say they are for the iPad 2 and work fine on the newest iPad (March 2012), the bracket that clamps onto the iPad doesn't work with the newest iPad. I think the thickness of the new iPad is just a few millimeters bigger than the clamp can snap to.

Also, although the goose-neck bar feels stiff, slowly over time, it starts to droop. Again, maybe this is because of the extra weight of the newest iPad.

The quality is excellent, and it is always a really nice touch when the packaging is high-quality. I think it is mainly my fault for assuming that this version would work perfectly for the newest iPad.

I would recommend to Twelve South, that they update their product description warning iPad 3 owners that this won't work well with this newest version...and that maybe an iPad 3 version is coming soon or something.

BTW, I also own the Twelve South BookBook iPhone/wallet. I love it, and I get comments about it all the time. I highly recommend this.

After a good amount of research looking into a product that would give me a stable adjustable arm for my iPad 2 this Twelve South product delivered. This is a review after a good amount of time has passed because with some products, they start off strong and fade soon after. Not this product, it's staying strong.

It's simple, easy to adjust, made very well and above all does what it's intended to do, hold your iPad next to your iMac in a safe and adjustable manner, nothing more, nothing less.

Starting with Space Saver: Excellent, no stand to take up extra desk or table space. Simply mount it to your iMac and adjust it, done. Easy to dust around for those thinking about more than just space saving and cleans up nice if need be.

Assembly: Very Easy so Excellent: Gives you plenty of ways to assemble which also leads into adjusting to your needs. Take your time, put it together one piece at a time and things are fine. I've read reviews about trying to mount this with everything all in place and I just have to ask why make things difficult and then rate a product low because the "buyer" didn't assemble it the easy way.

Build Quality: Very good from simplicity to fit & finish. The materials used seem to be top quality for what this product is designed to do, hold an iPad snug and allow one to adjust it to their liking. Metal where metal should be such as the arm, the bracket that attaches to said surface though it really is designed to accompany an iMac first and foremost and then the iPad plate that holds the iPad. Is the plate snug? Yes, why would you not want it to hold an iPad secure, that would cause some complaints about rubbing the iPads surface so those addressing the it's really snug comment need to understand it's main purpose.

My Wife uses this attached to the arm of chairs to use the iPad2 with our 18 month old. It's WAY better than previous arms.

Suggestions: Make iPad1 mounts available, finger tightenable clamp.

Out of the box (and on the Internet), this item appears solid and well made. I also, typically, like Twelve South products. The problem is, this just doesn't work. I played with this for about 15 minutes trying to get it to stay in one place with the iPad in it. No luck. I tightened it like Superman would, but once I put the iPad in, it would slowly sink down. The bracket was indeed solidly attached; it is the articulating arm that was the culprit for me. It just wouldn't maintain its rigidity, thus rendering this whole thing useless. So, while it may be well made, it's useless from a practical standpoint.
