Frequently Asked Questions

Will PlugBug charge my iPod or other USB devices?

Yes. PlugBug will charge ‘any’ USB chargeable devices like bluetooth headsets, iPods, non-Apple smartphones, etc. Simply connect your USB charging cable to PlugBug and plug the charger into any wall outlet for a stand-alone charger, or snap PlugBug onto your MacBook Power Adapter for the ultimate "all-in-one" charger.

Will PlugBug fit my older MacBook Power Adapter?

PlugBug fits all current AND previous MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air Power Adapters. It even fits other Apple products like the Apple Battery Charger, Airport Express and even older Apple USB Chargers - anything that uses the white removable 'duck-head' part for its power plugs - PlugBug fits!

Why would I need a dual charger?

Having one device that charges two Mac products at once has several benefits. First, you have one less charger to carry around and secondly, you only need one power outlet to charge two devices at once. If you spend time working on the road, in conference rooms, coffee shops, etc., you know how hard it can be to find an outlet. Having a dual charger like PlugBug means one power supply is all you need to quickly charge both your MacBook and iPad or iPhone at the same time.

What if I only need one to charge my iPhone?

Not to worry. PlugBug works as a stand alone wall charger as well. You can use it to charge just your iPhone or iPad anytime.

Just thought it was worth mentioning!

It's nice not to occupy a USB port just to charge a device plus get the benefits of faster charging from the wall plug.

Only having to take up one outlet to charge both my devices at once is great.

I bought this as a gift for my wife who has a MacBook Air and both an iPad and iPhone as a means of helping her keep her USB ports free and or not have to use multiple chargers. When she first tried it on her power adapter it wouldn't seat fully on the MacBook Air adapter plug and even when I tried it did not seem to fit completely on the charger so I just assumed it was not compatible with the Air and we dissapointedly repackaged it and I was in the process of returning it when I did one more check on the product description to see if it mentioned that it wasn't compatible with the Air. On the contrary the description said that it was compatible with ALL styles MacBook charger units. So I went back opened the package again and used much more pressure when sliding it onto the charger and it did finally seat completely and now seems to be working fine. I guess this is an example of needing brute force to make the thing work, normally when I try forcing something I end of breaking it ;)

1) Faster than charging using your Macbook's USB port.
2) Connects to either your Magsafe power adapter -OR- to an iOS wall charger (allowing you to charge two iOS devices at once off of one plug).
3) Looks good.
4) Keep it connected to your Magsafe when traveling for convenient packing.

CON: Overpriced - trading in on brand recognition and smart looking design to artificially inflate the price.

I bought the PlugBug a little over a year ago to work with my Macbook Air. At first I loved it. Great design, perfect fit, attractive finish. Which are fantastic qualities when we are talking about aesthetics alone. Except for the fact this device should DO SOMETHING. And for awhile, it did, it charged my iPad 3 and iPhone 4S numerous times.

But about a year after I bought it, it just would not charge anything via the USB. I tested it with multiple USB cables, and with multiple devices. Nothing was charging via the USB. I took out my multimeter to test the voltage, I got nothing. So what happened? Shoddy workmanship. I treated this thing like gold. My Macbook Air charges just fine, even through the PlugBug, but who cares? I had that functionally before I bought this thing. I bought it for the USB charging, and that is the part that does not work.

Twelve South could care less. After one year you are out of luck, and they have zero intention of providing a replacement for faulty hardware. I love Twelve South products, I love the thoughtfulness that goes into the design and their love for Apple products. That being said, I can't waste my money on products that are prone to fail.

If I knew they cared about customer satisfaction, I wouldn't be so afraid to buy their products. Don't spend your money on something that is going to break when you know they won't be willing to help you out. Just avoid the PlugBug.

I'm still shocked Apple didn't think of this before twelvesouth. This just goes to show the innovation from this accessory maker. I own a couple products from them (MagicWand and SurfacePad). They are always high quality and therefore durable. The convenience of the PlugBug is second to none. It's nice not to occupy a USB port just to charge a device plus get the benefits of faster charging from the wall plug. I leave it on my power adapter at all times and it's saved me from those moments with my 4S and its lovely battery life in addition to my iPad. Keep in mind, it powers anything USB. It's as nice as those wall outlets that have USB ports built in, but those are few and far between so PlugBug fills that convenience.

This product is fantastic. It only takes a few minutes of looking online to see that the picture shown is for the Macbook Air, but this fits really nicely onto the Macbook Pro charger as well. I would highly recommend this product to a friend. It does everything it promises to do.

Purchased this item to help keep at least two of my i-devices charging at one time. I'm very satisfied with it's simplicity and I think it looks interesting. One of the reviews stated that it doesn't work very well when plugged into a wall socket. I would agree with this, as it seems by design that the charger is heavy enough on the bottom to pull it free from a receptacle. However, I plug mine into an extension cord that lays on the floor, so this is not an issue for me. Just thought it was worth mentioning! Overall, I'm very satisfied with this product and I recommend it.

The A/C prongs aren't properly designed to hold the weight of the attached Mac charger. The entire unit routinely falls out of wall sockets, especially in hotels and older homes. In my own house, I found that only one powerstrip that could seat the unit without it falling out. When I travel I haven't found a single hotel outlet that the PlugBug doesn't just fall out of. This strikes me as not only rendering the device useless for charging anything, I have also noticed that the exposed prongs as it is slipping out represent a shock and fire hazard.

I tried the classic trick of bending the prongs, but aside from the fact that this doesn't always work anyway, to get the PlugBug to seat tightly the prongs must be bent so far that they can no longer be collapsed down for travel storage so they will damage anything stowed next to them in your luggage.

I really thought this was a clever design to free up a USB port on my laptop to charge my phone. Instead I found it to be a potentially dangerous accessory that is more likely to start a fire than charge your devices.
