I'm a do-it-yourselfer and find most of my how-to in books. This book has Q & A sessions to help yourself. It has an extensive "self-interview" after the First Step that is invaluable. It's easy to read and I loved it.

This book is ok but there is already a 12 step book for AA. If I were going to recommend one other book besides the original BiG Book of AA it would be An Encounter With A Prophet, the book that helped me understand my higher power better.

Alton Weldon on the Twelve-Step Program,
This review is from: The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous: Interpreted by the Hazelden Foundation (Paperback)
Brief Review of Alton Weldon's Essay
Alcoholics Anonymous: A Twelve-Step Program This is a brief summary of the process and effectiveness of a twelve-step program in helping people recover from addictions. It focuses on Alcoholics Anonymous' basic principles and beliefs simply because that is what the author is most familiar with. Most of these programs are based on the initiative of Alcoholics Anonymous and they have all proven to be very effective when applied rigorously and continuously. These twelve-step programs are more than just a means of recovery. They are a plan for happy living. Many people do not realize the fact that the twelve steps can be used, combined with a spiritual awareness, to increase any persons view on life. The previous destructive behaviors of participants are of course a main concern but the end result is one of a better lifestyle, a way of living in a manner more consistent with society and personal improvement. While the author does lay out the basics of the twelve steps, he is mostly concerned with attacking the misconception that these programs are designed only to keep a person abstinent. Barriers are broken with these programs, that otherwise would prevent the blossoming of many of life's gifts and the overall beauty of God's creations. The point is that these steps are available to everyone. All can delve into the concepts and come to have a spiritual awakening that will change them for the better -- forever. This is a blessing that none should ignore.
