The Terrors and Triumphs of Being Twelve,
By Little Willow (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twelve (Winnie Years) (Hardcover)
Twelve, like its predecessor Eleven, follows a year in the life of a girl named Winnie. Twelve picks up right where Eleven leaves off and keeps right on going. Each month gets a chapter which either details most of the things that happened that month or highlights a special event. Suddenly, everything seems to be changing: her family, her friends, her life, her body. Winnie's sixth grade year is certainly a memorable one!The book will definitely appeal to girls in late elementary and early middle school who are going through the same things Winnie is going through. Middle school is a tough time. Readers will wince with Winnie when she gets embarrassed and smile when she conquers her fears. If you liked Eleven, you'll definitely like Twelve.

*** BAD CONTENT****,
This review is from: Twelve (Winnie Years) (Paperback)
My daughter is 11 and this book is TOTALLY inappropriate for an 11 year old. This should be read by a 15 or 16 year old! There is talk about sex, erections and periods, and totally inappropriate content. Don't buy this book unless you don't care!

This book seemed like the perfect book for my 12 year old daughter, until she brought it to me showing me the section that graphically describes an erection!!! I was horrified that I had picked out this book at the book store. Don't let your 12 year old read this. As my 12 year old said guess I won't be reading 13. Totally inappropriate.

Lauren Myracle's books are totally inappropriate for girls under 15 or 16. My 5th grade daughter just read Twelve (it is recommended for girls 10 and up). It contains way to many references to topics that are not appropriate for upper elementary, or even middle school aged children including a graphic explanation of "hard ons" and references to "kids having sex." It also included alot of information about periods and tampons that really scared her. I was shocked when she brought the book to me asking for explanations. I should have been more careful. My sister in law had the same complete shock this summer when her 13 year old read another Lauren Myracle book L8rG8r that had passages too graphic to repeat on this forum. I should have paid closer attention then to the author's name so I would have known that Lauren Myracle's books are completely inappropriate for this age group. There should be a warning for parents on the cover of the book so they can make informed decisions about what is and is not appropriate for their children.

not for young girls,

This book had parts that are totally inappropriate for any girl younger than 15. It explaines male erections in detail, and discusses kids having sex like its no big deal. If you are a parent who cares about what your young daughter is exposed to, do NOT buy this book!

Definitely NOT appropriate reading for a 12 year old. :(,
This review is from: Twelve (Winnie Years) (Paperback)
My 12 year old daughter just brought home this book from the library and I am mortified that I let her read it!!! I am usually really careful about what she reads. I saw this was a New York Times Bestseller. Seeing that, I figured that it should be fine. Well, she brought it to me and pointed out how they explained, IN DETAIL, what an erection is!!! :( I'm sorry, but that has NO place in a book geared for 12 year old girls!!! Aside from that part and another part describing how to place tampons, the book seemed to be well written. :( I am so sad that the author felt the need to put completely inappropriate material in a book that she knows that innocent kids are going to read! I wish she hadn't included those parts. She seems to be a good author, but this was just not appropriate in my opinion.

INAPPROPRIATE for kids under 14 years old,
By
This review is from: Twelve (Winnie Years) (Paperback)
The book details inappropriate explicit sexual references that kids below 8th Grade should not read. Topics such as boys enjoying voyeurism, imagining a boy's erection, thongs, tampoons, etc. are definitely something that a parent should explain differently rather than graphic perspectives from a peer. These are not the values that we should impart to our youth.

I thought this book was amazing! I would suggest you read the first book too, because it is equally amazing! I'm disappointed about the many 1 star reviews, all because of a few "inappropriate" things. But really, it's not that bad! Those are things twelve year olds are actually wondering Mom. And just because you don't like your daughter reading those things, it still is not a bad book! The writing is fab, and you actually feel like you are right there with Winnie. And overall, this story just tells the true tales of growing up. 5 stars all the way =]

I bought this book for my 11 year old daughter in the Independent Reader section of Borders for ages 8-12. My daughter had already read Eleven and enjoyed it. After getting halfway through the book, my daughter came to me with some "questions." After examining that particular section of the book, I was horrified at the content. There was vulgar and discusting language pertaining to boy's body parts and very adult themes. Upon flipping through some more pages, I was once again horrifed at the derogatory style of writing regarding girl's mentral cycles, which I found alarming and not humorous at all. In fact, had my child read this part, she would have been quite upset. I am discusted with this author in that she would write this kind of material for young girls to read. Totally inappropriate for anyone under the age of 15. What ever happend to writing clean, quality, literature with humor- like Beverly Cleary. I guess it Lauren Myracle's way of making a buck and selling a book at the risk of polluting the minds of young girls!Beware, to all mothers that care what your child is reading.

It is OK for your daughter to read this book, don't get worked up about the other reviews,

This is my first review on Amazon. I felt I had to say something. My daughter - she is 10 - really liked the book Eleven, and wanted me to get Twelve for her. I said sure. But when I found the book on Amazon and read some of the reviews I got all worked up over it, and I wanted to go to a book store and have a chance to glance though it before I let her read it. Here is the deal. There are no graphic details, and there is absolutely nothing in the book that you should not discuss with a 10-11-12 year old. If you have open communication with your daughter. But if you don't, this book is NOT your biggest problem. My daughter loved the book, read it in two days.
