This book is Israel Regardie's original of what is now called The One Year Manual: Twelve Steps to Spiritual Enlightenment. I prefer this older version because it uses Christian references, which speak to me better than the newer one with Pagan and Egyptian ones. The exercise are the same as in the newer edition, they just have a Christian influence. Of course, I have nothing against anyone using whatever "Speaks" to them, so if the Pagan and Egyptian references are your cup of tea, then go for that. In fact, Mr. Regardie didn't want to use the Christian references originally, but some well meaning friends convinced him that it would sell better that way.

I originally used a copy of the newer version and read in the preface that the original used Chritian references, so I therefore bought a used copy and for quite some price I might add. But that is what I wanted, so the additional expenditure was worth it to me. In fact, I have gone to Levi, Agrippa and other original authors to make my rituals more in line with Judeo-Chritian influences. The Golden Dawn rituals use a lot from Levi, and I have reworded them accordingly.

Overall, either version of this book will prepare you for further studies of magic. Franz Bardon's Initiation into Hermetics has similiar exercises as this at the beginning, such as thought control, thought discipline, and mastery of thoughts, introspection(self-cognizance), mystery of breathing, and so on. Anyone wanting to start Bardon's system, would benefit by using Regardie's book first.
