Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This 684-page book is the long-awaited -- and equally long-discussed (at least in the Cabell family) -- follow-on to Alexander Brown's "The Cabells and Their Kin." The book includes biographies of Bishop William Cabell Brown, the author James Branch Cabell, General William Lewis Cabell C.S.A, ("Old Tige" and four-time mayor of Dallas), General Charles P. Cabell, USAF, and over 500 other Cabells and their kin from every walk of life. The biographies are heavily indexed on military service, education, church affiliation, hobbies, etc. In addition to the biographies, over 9500 Cabells, their spouses and descendants are organized in computer-prepared descendancy charts, plus indexes to their own marriages and their parents marriages. The book is beautifully bound in red, with a Cabell seal gold embossed on the cover. The book is also cross indexed with Alexander Brown's "The Cabells and Their Kin", so that the researcher can trace some Cabell lines across four centuries.

From Chapter III - Dr. William Cabell and Elizabeth Burks in America: So the mystery of Dr. Cabell and his tradition of service as a surgeon in the Royal Navy deepens. ...for those readers who prefer to stay with this scenario, we can add the tantalizing prospect that he did come to America on the Enterprise. As contemporary readers know -- and it is hoped that readers in the 21st century and beyond will find in history -- an extremely popular television series in the late 20th century was , which chronicled the fictional adventures of the Starship Enterprise as it "boldly goes where no one has gone before." How fitting if Dr. Cabell did arrive on the H.M.S. Enterprise!

5.0 out of 5 stars This reads as if it were a series of historical novelettes, June 15, 1999
This review is from: Twentieth Century Cabells and their Kin (Hardcover)
This could have been titled "The Cabells and Our Country". While history may be presented in a dull and uninteresting manner, this volume reads as if it were historical fiction of the John Jakes genre. If the author is offended by this comparison, he shouldn't be. From Vol. I, Dr. William Cabell, the Immigrant, who didn't charge patients if he didn't cure them, through the contemporaries of Washington and Jefferson who helped to launch the Revolutionary War and then fought in it, Cabells are there. Vol. I continues through the Civil War with the 6 Cabell brothers of Danville and their sacrifices, to the turn of the century. The 20th Century Volume covers the Spanish- American War, where a former Confederate cavalry general volunteers for active service, followed by WWI, WWII, the Berlin Airlift where a Cabell wife accompanies her husband on the flights and pushes cargo from the plane, the Korean War and Viet Nam. When the bugle sounded, the Cabells responded. If you want to know anything about the 20th Century Cabells, this is the book. If you just want to feel some of the many facets of 20th Century History and how it was flavored by real people such as the Cabells, you could do a lot worse than this book. Randolph Wall Cabell has done a historical tour de force for the Cabell family and for those interested in the human side of our country's history.
