Biography

Alabama is an American country band formed in 1969 with the original name Young Country. As Alabama they enjoyed considerable success in the 1980s with a string of platinum albums and many hit singles.

Young Country didn't last long, as two members of the band went off to college. They got back together as Wildcountry in 1972, and a year later they decided to become full-time musicians. By 1977… Read more in Amazon's Alabama Store

Editorial Reviews

Ironically, being displaced from the bestseller lists by Garth and Shania has given these veteran mainstream hit-makers a new creative lease on life. While playing to a smaller, postmultiplatinum niche, they have made some of the best and most adventurous music of their two-decade career. Mind you, there's little that Alabama do that somebody somewhere doesn't do better. This is true of lead singer Randy Owen's masterful but often overly sentimental balladeering and of vocalist-guitarist Jeff Cook's frequent forays into R&B-leaning beach music, represented here by the punchy, full-blown Muscle Shoals-style horn arrangement of the original "Mist of Desire." That said, Alabama's best efforts display an earnestness, charm, and wry down-home gravitas, and there's quite a bit of their best here. The heartbroken "Write It Down in Blue" and the hopeful blue-collar testimonial "Small Stuff" are both first rate. Ditto for the title tune, which is the best goodbye to the century heard yet. --Bob Allen

4.0 out of 5 stars One of Alabama's Best of the last 10 years, January 28, 2000

I was immediately impressed with this album. When I first listened to it I thought it would've been repetitive stuff but I was very impressed. There are many terrific songs worthy of radio including "Twentieth Century", "Life's Too Short To Love Like That" (a song that has that same kind of groove as their #1 hit "I'm In A Hurry"), and "Small Stuff". I think this album is equally as good as their last studio album, "Dancing On The Boulevard", one of their best albums of their career. I highly recommend this album to any Alabama fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another homerun by the greatest country band of all time, December 8, 1999

Just when you think they would be slowing down, the boys put out another gem. From the opening "Twentieth Century", talking about our century, you're hooked. "Small Stuff" is one of the best songs on the album, a wonderful song about keeping things in perspective in life and love. "I love you enough to let you go" is a great message about growing up and leaving home. This is an album with a great mix of slow and tender songs, and upbeat tap your foot songs. If you don't have this album, you need it. It's a great album, even if you're not an Alabama fan. Simply wonderful.
