Book Description

This history of Mongolia in English highlights the role of international politics in the shaping of Mongolia's history, involving Russia/the Soviet Union, China and Japan. It is composed of three parts, each examining crucial periods in the 20th century, concluding with Mongolia's independence from China in 1946. The first section offers a survey of the history of Mongolia up to the 1911 revolution. The second part looks to the political situation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, up to the early socialist period (the early 1920s). The last section draws heavily upon new material, now available since the collapse of the socialist regime in 1990. It offers an understanding of the events of the 1920s and 1930s in Mongolia - a key period in the country's history. During this period the Soviet influence became do,minant, and they faced the most serious threats to their power. This part of the book also examines the destruction of the Buddhist church and nobility by the socialists, concluding with the official recognition of Mongolia's independence by China in 1946.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Baabar is one of independent Mongolia's best-known popular historians and this volume is a welcome translation of his general account of modern Mongolian history, written for a Mongolian audience following the fall of the Soviet Union."

About the Author

Batbar, currently serving as Finance Minister, is perhaps best known as an author of samizdat and a founder of the Mongolian Social Democratic Party. He began writing samizdat in the early 1980s. At first critical of socialism from within a socialist framework, by the mid-1980s he had begun to question socialism itself. He continued his writing into the 1990s, often offering highly opinionated views of Mongolian society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get your best knowledge on Mongol history!!!!, April 16, 2001
Baabar's Twentieth Century Mongolia is one of the best books ever written on Mongol history. This is the sole available work that not only deals with Chingis-Khanite period till modern day Mongolia, but is also written by a Mongol person. The book would be a great help for one who is doing a research on Mongol history and people. Not only a great writer, Mr. Baabar is a leading democratic revolutionist and a respectable politician in our country.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for Asian history buffs, November 9, 1999
This review is from: Twentieth Century Mongolia (Hardcover)
This is a groundbreaking history of Mongolia. Much of it is based on documentation that was locked in secret archives during Mongolia's 70 years as a Soviet sattelite. Never before have historians had access to records from the regime of Choibalsan, Stalin's appointed henchman in Mongolia. This volume thoroughly explains and documents Mongolian history from the earliest days until 1946. The author, Baabar, is a renown historian and politician in Mongolia. (I was an editor of an earlier version of this book.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet!, July 31, 2003
This review is from: Twentieth Century Mongolia (Hardcover)
IF you are interested in Mongolia's early history (Genghis, Ogodei, Kublai, the Mongols, etc.) this isn't the one you would want. However, this book has lots of information from beginning of 1900s to 1945.
