Formidable and Enlightening,

Macquarrie's main problem is that he has been successful (Principles of Christian Theology (2nd Edition) Jesus Christ in Modern Thought). I suspect, therefore, that he has not received due recognition for his contribution to the Anglican Communion, as well as wider theological circles.In short, he has produced a very significant body of work; all of it is first rate and "Twentieth-Century Religious Thought" is no exception. The breadth of this particular work is formidable. The attention to detail is commendable and the way he handles each scholar is enlightening, for example, his astute handling of Mark C. Taylor in the new chapter on postmodernism (which is a feature of the new edition). This is an excellent work, but because Macquarrie handles all the material carefully and dispassionately, there is a danger of missing his unique contribution. So please read the subtext, as well as the text, and enjoy.
