Book Description

February 1, 2002
This comprehensive guide through the tangled maze of modern theologies and philosophies is now made more useful than ever. Eminent theologian John Macquarrie has added a wealth of new material to his widely-used work, creating an expanded edition that will take its place as essential reading in the field. Macquarrie begins with an in-depth exploration of the theological and philosophical background of the nineteenth-century. He traces the development of Protestant and Catholic thought during the twentieth century, including Neo-Orthodoxy, transcendental Thomism, liberation theology, and feminist theology. Now this authoritative account of twentieth-century religious thought includes an insightful section on postmodernism and religious thought. Macquarrie deals evenhandedly with postmodernist thinkers such as Levinas, Derrida, and Lyotard, and he fairly and thoroughly examines the work of postmodernist theologians Mark C. Taylor, Graham Ward, and Jean-Luc Marion. Throughout the book, Macquarrie seeks to put forth an understanding of religion that is reasonable, contemporary, and comprehensive. Theology professors and students will welcome this new edition as a basic text for introductory courses. It offers an enduring resource for steering through the often perplexing world of modern theology, especially at its interface with philosophy. John Macquarrie is Emeritus Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity in the University of Oxford and the author of Principles of Christian Theology and Jesus Christ in Modern Thought (Trinity Press International).

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Few authors can aspire to Macquarrie's encyclopedic breadth and clarity of coverage now happily available again I this newly enlarged and updated edition. From the more obscure traditions of idealist philosophy, through a broad range of multicultural perspectives prominent since the 1960's, to the current debates over postmodernism, Macquarrie's genius for concise exposition and critique will serve as a dependable and welcome guide for today's students. " --Christopher Morse, Dietrich Bonhoeffer Professor of Theology and Ethics Union Theological Seminary, NY (Christopher Morse )

"For years, John Macquarrie's TWENTIETH-CENTURY RELIGIOUS THOUGHT has long been a trusted resource for students of religion. His careful summary and thoughtful analysis of the course of theological reflection provides an invaluable map for territory that is often confusing. The new edition concludes the story of the twentieth century Macquarrie has been tracing and defines theological trajectories at the beginning of the new millennium." Mark C. Taylor, Cluett Professor of Humanities, Williams College (Mark C. Taylor )

"He expresses what spirituality ought to be about, the right to wander here and there throughout God's love, often crisscrossing denominational lines (religion) in leaps that seem almost contradictory, but express where the author has been drawn to God. This honesty, this demand for clarity of thought and content, produces yet another edition of Macquarrie's religious thought that capture a lifetime of faith and a lifetime of hunger."--Resources Hotline, March 2002

"Twentieth-Century Religious Thought is widely known as a masterly survey of the period. Now it can reflect its title in full by covering the whole century. Macquarrie's penetrating comprehension and clear exegesis of such a bewildering variety of diverse schools of thought and individual philosophers and theologians are astonishing." (Maurice Wiles )

"I know of no one on the current theological scene who has greater ability to summarize and describe varying points of view with such scrupulous fairness and clarity, and yet maintain a distinctive position." (Robert McAfee Brown )

This review is from: Twentieth-Century Religious Thought (Paperback)
Macquarrie's main problem is that he has been successful (Principles of Christian Theology (2nd Edition) Jesus Christ in Modern Thought). I suspect, therefore, that he has not received due recognition for his contribution to the Anglican Communion, as well as wider theological circles.
In short, he has produced a very significant body of work; all of it is first rate and "Twentieth-Century Religious Thought" is no exception. The breadth of this particular work is formidable. The attention to detail is commendable and the way he handles each scholar is enlightening, for example, his astute handling of Mark C. Taylor in the new chapter on postmodernism (which is a feature of the new edition).
This is an excellent work, but because Macquarrie handles all the material carefully and dispassionately, there is a danger of missing his unique contribution. So please read the subtext, as well as the text, and enjoy.
